"A player I really like is Alex Scott from Bournemouth. What he did last season is fantastic and I think he could easily be in the next team of the year."

🚨🎙️Zinedine Zidane : " When my son Enzo played his first match against Messi and came home, he was very happy and told me,

"I played against Messi, it's a strange feeling." I asked him what you noticed about Messi. He said, "Messi doesn't run a lot. He walks and watches the game, and suddenly he scores! He doesn't waste his energy, but reads the game like a chess player." I laughed because that's exactly what I always notice about Messi.

Messi knows how to use his slowness as a weap"n . My son got a Messi shirt, a football lesson, and a letter as well. What did he say to him? Messi told him, "You run a lot. You have to wait for the ball, don't run for it. Let it come to you. And next time you play against me, focus on the ball, not me, because the ball is what matters most." (Laughs). Enzo now hangs Messi's shirt in his room next to mine, but I think he's more proud of Messi's shirt. (Laughs)"

Lionel Messi's spell at PSG remains one of the most underrated chapters of his career. The standards he's judged by have always existed on a level reserved for no one else.

🚨New: Sir Alex Ferguson on the Messi, Pele, Maradona and Ronaldo GOAT debate:

• Interviewer: Sir Alex, the debate never ends — Messi, Pelé, Maradona, Ronaldo. Who is the greatest of all time for you?

🗣️Ferguson:

“I’ve been asked this question more times than I can count over the years, and for a long time I refused to give a straight answer because the debate was still open. It isn’t open anymore.

Messi’s World Cup in 2022 was the final piece. Before that tournament he already had everything else, the Champions Leagues, the league titles in different countries, the Ballons d’Or, the individual brilliance that no one could match. The only thing missing was the World Cup. He went and got it. When a player completes the full set like that, the conversation changes. He has now completed football. Every major trophy, every individual award, every level of the game. That closes the debate for me.

Because of that completion, Messi sits clearly above Pele, Maradona and Ronaldo. I’m not saying the other three weren’t great. Of course they were. But the ledger is now complete for Messi in a way it never was for the others, and that has to count.

Now, people will jump on the fact that Cristiano was my player. He was. He is still my boy in many ways. I have huge affection and respect for him, the hunger, the work rate, the way he rebuilt himself season after season. That part is emotional for me. But the ranking itself is no longer emotional. It’s factual. You separate the personal from the professional when the evidence is this clear.

Let’s be honest about what Cristiano is. He is the more adaptable, all-round player. Different leagues, different systems, different styles of play. He could score with either foot, with his head, from distance, from six yards. He could lead a dressing room, he could carry a team on pure willpower, and he stayed at the highest level for an absurd length of time. No serious person denies any of that. Physical dominance, leadership, versatility — he has those qualities in abundance.

But adaptable is not the same as greatest. In pure footballing terms — the genius of the first touch, the vision, the consistency at the absolute peak for over a decade, and now the complete trophy case — Messi is on another level. Ronaldo is not close in that specific sense. One is an extraordinary athlete and competitor who maximised every ounce of his talent. The other is simply a better footballer. That’s the distinction.

Pele and Maradona were gods of their eras, no question. But the modern game is harder, deeper, and more athletic. The athletic demands, the tactical organisation, the quality of opposition week after week, it’s a different beast. Messi dominated a far stronger era for longer than either of them managed. That has to be recognised.

I’m not sentimental about this. Sentiment is for fans and for the media and if I’m being honest , he made me question my job. Both times we faced him in the Champions League, I thought, ‘What do you even do against that?’ I’ve been in football a long time, but since I started coaching, I’ve never seen a creature like him. Absolutely unbelievable.”

When you strip it back to what actually happened on the pitch and in the trophy cabinet, the answer is clear.

Cristiano is an extraordinary athlete and competitor. Messi is just a better footballer. You can love Ronaldo more. You can respect him more. You can prefer his story, his personality, his work ethic. All of that is fair. What you cannot do is put him above Messi anymore. The ledger is closed.”

Cristiano is an all-time great. Messi is the greatest. That’s just how it is now.”

Safe to say Romelu Lukaku is a better EPL and Serie A player than Cristiano Ronaldo.
