A girl was stalked, sexually harassed and inappropriately touched by her neighbour.

But when the case reached court, the focus also turned to something that had nothing to do with the crime: her clothes.

During the trial, questions were raised about her “western” dressing, including whether her wearing jeans could “corrupt young boys”.

The Delhi High Court strongly rejected this line of thinking.

While overturning the accused’s acquittal in the 2013 case, Justice Chandrasekharan Sudha said a woman’s clothing is her personal choice and that neither society nor anyone else has the right to dictate what she wears.

The court’s message was simple: teach children to respect boundaries and control their conduct, not girls to change their clothes.
