Some species, such as the Indian and white-rumped vultures, have lost anywhere from 97%-99% of their populations. As recently as the 1980’s their numbers were in the hundreds of millions but now 16 out of the 23 vulture species face the threat of extinction.

There is a crisis involving the severe decline of vulture populations from accidental poisoning from a veterinary drug known as diclofenac and from eating lead ammunition from carcasses of animals that have been shot. Deliberate poisoning has also caused their numbers to plummet.

Vultures are divided into two groups, the New World vultures, found in the Americas, and the Old World Vultures, containing European, African and Asian species. They are absent from Australia and Antarctica.

Some of the largest extant birds capable of flight are vultures, such as both species of condors and the Eurasian black vulture, which is also known as a cinereous vulture.

Many vultures species mate for life and both parents care for the offspring. There are a pair of male vultures in captivity who have been together in a long-term relationship that have successfully hatched and raised a chick from an abandoned egg provided to them by staff.
