Prophet Peace Be Upon Him,

“As for the brotherhood of young men (al-akhiyya, al-fityan): the singular of akhiyya is akhi, pronounced like akh, “brother,” when a man says “my brother.”

These brotherhoods are found throughout the land of the Turcomans, in every district, city, and village. Nowhere else in the world are there men so eager to welcome strangers, feed others, meet people’s needs, restrain oppressors, and kill the agents of tyranny and the evil men who join them.

Among them, an akhi is a man chosen by craftsmen and other unmarried young men who live together and devote themselves to the ideal of youthful chivalry (futuwwa). Their leader builds a lodge and furnishes it with carpets, lamps, and whatever utensils and provisions are needed.

His companions work by day to earn their living, and after the afternoon prayer they bring him what they have earned. With this they buy fruit, food, and other things consumed in the lodge.

If a traveler arrives in the town that day, they take him in as their guest there, and these provisions are used to offer him hospitality. He remains with them until he leaves. If no traveler arrives, they gather together for the meal themselves.”
