Trump and His Boneheaded Tariffs Just Lost to Barenaked Ladies

Donald Trump is waging a petty war on America's closest neighbor — tariffs, import bans, "Lake America," memes calling Mark Carney "governor." Then an NFL team two hours from Toronto walked out and booked O Canada for the first regular-season game in a brand-new $2.2 billion stadium.

That is the humiliation. Not a diplomat. Not Ottawa. Buffalo.

Next Thursday, before the Bills host the Detroit Lions at Highmark Stadium, Barenaked Ladies will sing the Canadian anthem. Auli'i Cravalho will sing the American one. The team called it a first in the new building and a celebration of both countries. They did not need to mention Trump. The calendar did it for them.

This is a border team with a border business. Canadians have long been a chunk of the season-ticket base — estimates in the 10–15 percent range, with thousands of tickets and a serious share of personal-seat-license money coming from north of the Peace Bridge. The Bills used to play regular-season games in Toronto. The Sabres have played both anthems for decades. Buffalo already knows who buys the beer and drives the two hours. Trump does not.

So while the president bans Canadian booze, motorcycles, and dairy, and while Carney slaps retaliatory tariffs back across the table, an American franchise is putting a Canadian rock band on the field to open the house. Trump can rename a Great Lake on paper. He cannot make Bills Mafia pretend southern Ontario does not exist.

Call it goodwill if you want. Call it marketing. Either way, it is a public reminder that the deranged psychopath's border feud looks smaller in the one place the feud actually has to live: a stadium built on a trade route, filled with fans who do not care which executive order is trending this week.

Trump wanted toughness. He got One Week and a maple leaf in prime time. The tariffs were supposed to humble Canada. Instead, the Bills, Canadians, and Barenaked Ladies are humiliating him.

@Gusterbear I like my doctors and think I am in good hands, but it’s like they don’t quite hear what I’m saying. I think about half as fast as I used to, which makes work difficult. And I have a lot of fatigue that waxes and wanes but mostly waxes. I just want to feel normal. Sigh.

@Gusterbear Oh, Kid. I wish they could get to the bottom of this and fix it. I relate to you in terms of anxiety, depression, and other problems, along with a variety of physical issues. I have told my doctors for a year or two that I think there is something really wrong with me.
