Why are AI skills assessments resulting in an almost 75% failure rate? According to Kennith Jackson, SVP of solutions at Andela, it’s because companies are more than likely testing for the wrong things.
The rapid onset of AI has led to an increasing demand for AI engineers, but at the same time, it has resulted in collapsing at least three different types of technical work into a single job description.
For every one FDE, teams will need three or four engineers operating in more specific modes of work. And the AI work that enterprises need done falls along a spectrum defined by three archetypes.
1. Prototypers
The rapid experimenters. Those who use AI tools to quickly test ideas, find value, and throw away what doesn’t work.
2. Builders
Those who turn validated ideas into production systems. Those who operate as agentic engineers: architecting the system, orchestrating the agents to build it, verifying the output and shipping with confidence.
3. Scalers
The engineers responsible for reliability, governance, observability, and production AI operations. These professionals were, in a previous era, DevOps engineers. They know how to deploy LLMs and manage the liability of model output at enterprise scale.
While these shouldn’t be looked at as rigid job categories, as there is a lot of blend and overlap, they do represent patterns of AI engagement. This framework is meant to provide enterprises a vocabulary to help identify where they fall and what they need.
Understanding where your AI initiatives fall along this spectrum is one of the most important change-management decisions enterprises face in an AI-first world, and it’s why companies that identify their specific location on this spectrum move dramatically faster than those hiring generically.

What's hype and what's truth? Barun Singh and Kennith Jackson take a critical look at the current state of AI development and discuss what technologists should be doing now to mitigate technical debt and create real productivity in enterprise systems.
This is an honest discussion of both the challenges and opportunities facing technology professionals.

By considering the broader context and how components affect each other, technologists can make more informed decisions and build solutions that support long-term success.

Please join us in congratulating Norbert Osiemo on taking home the $3000 grand prize at the first Andela x OpenAI Codex Champions Showcase.
Norbert created a project called “Ubuntu Voice,” a platform for reporting conflicts, finding out about local emergencies, and facilitating responses from humanitarian organizations in real-time. With Ubuntu Voice, he wanted to solve the real-world challenge of delivering time-sensitive aid to those in conflict zones while protecting those reporting incidents from retaliation or loss of privacy.
Congratulations Norbert! And a big thank you to everyone who took part. Your thirst for learning and creative problem-solving is truly inspiring.
And thank you to Emmanuel Lubanzadio, OpenAI, for your support and participation.
Our go-to-market team just converged in Toronto for three days of intensive sessions. The goal? To better help our clients—both current and future—solve their most pressing AI adoption challenges.
This includes assessing current needs to identify gaps, formulating an informed plan to close those gaps, and following through on execution. Whether that means staff augmentation, fully managed services, skills training, or a combination of all three.
The weather was beautiful, and the company even better. What a great way to welcome our new GTM colleagues! We even had some birthdays and Andelaversaries to celebrate.
We can't wait to share what the team developed and how we're helping organizations move more smoothly from AI ambition to successful implementation.

For technologists, the main goal of communication is to make sure the right people have the right information to stay aligned and make informed decisions.
This week’s #BeyondTheCode spotlight: Stakeholder Communication
We recently ran a poll on our social media and the results showed that over half of the respondents ask AI first when solving a problem at work. We'd love to know: which area are you leaning on it most?
AI acts most like a:
A. Research assistant or editor
B. Coding partner
C. Task automator
D. Other (please comment)
Congratulations to the winners of the first Andela x OpenAI Codex Champions Showcase: Nixon Chebii, Norbert Osiemo, and Alex Odhiambo!
Developers from across the region took part in a 2-week learning seminar all about integrating Codex into their workflows. It culminated in a capstone project focused on using Codex to make real, transformative change in Africa.
We gathered together, both virtually and in person in Nairobi, to hear how Andela and OpenAI see Africa as a key player in driving technological progress and to meet other people interested in combining top-tier African talent and top-tier technology to power real change.
We left inspired to create meaningful change through technology (and hope you did, too)!
Stay tuned for a deeper dive into each project in the coming weeks.
