@Celestemarcus3 , Liberties Quarterly managing editor, is in the news today. In the excellent Winter 2024 volume of Liberties, she wrote “After Rape: A Guide for the Tormented”, a piece about her own experience of a 2021 rape. And today, she revealed the identity of her rapist.

“I will not be raped with impunity”, she wrote today to explain why she’s gone public with his identity.

As it happens, I sat down with Marcus last week at the Liberties office in Washington DC to talk about “After Rape”. Our conversation is as raw as the piece, particularly in the context of today’s news.

I fear that White’s book would be subject to censorship. Decadence, with its brilliant scholarship and delicious prose, would be a hard sell that a pub house would probably market for $100+ just for the ebook, making it out of reach for most of us polyglots.

2 of the best books I’ve read were out of print books.

One is Edmund Whites “Nocturnes for the King of Naples”.

The other is Richard Gilman’s masterpiece “Decadence: The Strange Life of an Epithet”.

Physical media is almost a Fahrenheit 451 (where people memorized entire books and thus became the book they loved) level of responsibility. If you own a great 4K HD, Blu-ray, DVD etc etc of a film or films you love... you are the custodian of those films for generations to come.

@moonbeeaam McNally Jackson at Prince is going to have the off the beaten path but even the rock center location has a lot. Argosy is a great place for “finds”. The strand is good for the rando FSG book that’s out of print but they def did an event there and still have 927 copies.
