On Shabbat, as we were reading the Torah portion, I had an epiphany.

God tells Abraham to leave his home and head to an undisclosed location, which, as we know, ends up being Canaan, aka the land of Israel.

But if you go deeper and look at the actual words of God’s commandment to Abraham, something jumps out at you.

Before I explain, let me ask you a question.

Jews around the world who decided that Aliyah is not for them, that Israel is not for them, what is their reasoning?

I’ve heard four explanations.

1- “I built a whole life here. I can’t just pick up and leave and abandon everything. This is my home where I’ve lived my whole life.”

2- “I am American. If I leave, who will stand up for the Jews? I am loyal to America. I’m not running away.”

3- “My family is here. I can’t just leave them here.”

4- “My kids are very sheltered here and as a result, very religious. If I bring them to Israel, they’ll be exposed to secular Jews and it’ll undermine everything I’ve raised them to believe.”

Four “excuses”.

Now let’s look at Abraham and you’ll see how God wasn’t only commanding him to go to Israel but rather, it was a commandment for all Jews throughout the generations.

The verse says: “GOD said to Abram, "Go forth from your home, from your native land, and from your father's house to the land that I will show you.”

Why all the repetition?

Why not just say “Leave home and go to Canaan”?

Why “… home, from your native land, and from your father's house to the land that I will show you.”?

Well, now let’s examine the four excuses.

“I built a whole life here. I can’t just pick up and leave and abandon everything. This is my home where I’ve lived my whole life.”

So God says “Go forth from your home…”

“I am American. If I leave, who will stand up for the Jews? I am loyal to America. I’m not running away.”

So God says “… from your native land.”

“My family is here. I can’t just leave them here.”

So God says “… And from your father’s house.”

And finally, the claim that Israel will somehow make people less religious?

God says “… to the land that I will show you.” (I will tell you how to be religious. Don’t you tell me!”

So the four descriptions used here in that first verse, they are not random. They address all the arguments made by Jews when trying to justify to themselves not coming home.

God might have been talking to Abraham when telling him to leave his home and go to Israel, but He was also talking to all of us, and by “Us”, I mean all Jews for all times.

Come home. It’s time. 🇮🇱🇮🇱
