One of the widely used #cloudmasking algorithms identifies white #sandy#beaches of #islands as high-probability #clouds.
This is one demonstration of the challenges in applying #remotesensing techniques which are considered reliable elsewhere, on island settings.
For the #Maldives, the #UNCharter is a promise that law can restrain power, and that promise remains alive, unfinished.
I spoke at the UN General Assembly this morning on #UNCharterDay.

I warmly commend the Maldives for their progressive generational smoking ban for everyone born after 1 January 2007.
This thoughtful measure helps protect future generations from the harms of tobacco.
In Germany, repeated increases in tobacco taxes have unfortunately also boosted the black market. It shows how important it is to combine tax policies with effective enforcement and complementary measures.
Thank you for this treasure, @NaajihDidi@liz_colton! Your pioneering Maldives research long before tourism is legendary — great to learn you later interviewed Afif Didi in Seychelles in 1978.
This photo captures so much: the North-South divide, the Maldives’ unique non-colonized status under British protection, and the resilience of those in exile (Ahmed Afif later became Seychelles VP).
Human stories behind history — wonderful!
One question: did AI colorize this beautifully, or is it original? 😊
A rare and personal momentnpreserved in time.
In this 1978 photograph taken at the family exile home in Seychelles, Elizabeth Colton stands alongside Abdulla Afif Didi. Elizabeth had travelled from the Maldives to interview him about his life and role in one of the most significant episodes in modern Maldivian history.
Abdulla Afif Didi, born in Hithadhoo, Addu Atoll, served as the President of the Addu People’s Council and the only President of the United Suvadive Republic (1 January 1959 – 23 September 1963). He went into exile with his family in Seychelles in September 1963, where he lived until his passing on 13 July 1993. His youngest son, Ahmed Afif, was the former Vice President of Seychelles.

"Happy discovery--just now, after looking through baskets of old framed photos, I found this I remembered of Abdullah Afeef Didi+me 7or 8 April 1978, at his+his wife Aneesah Ali Didi's family-exile-house in #Seychelles, taken after I'd come from #Maldives to interview him re his story."
These personal archives help illuminate the human stories behind the larger currents of Maldivian history, especially the distinct experiences of Addu Atoll.
Thank you, Liz, for sharing this treasure.

The only thing that will keep the MOU alive is if Trump cuts off the weapons flow to Israel.
Not tough talk. Not threaten to cut. Not cut 1 shipment. But cut it all.
Otherwise Israel has called your bluff & we are back to war & the brink of global economic depression.

At the IGN on #UNSC reform, #Maldives welcomed growing support for a rotating cross-regional #SIDS seat, and called for this momentum to be translated into text-based negotiations.
Reform delayed must now become reform delivered.
A promise kept. A vision realized.

UNCLOS (PCA Case No. 2017-06) largely dismissed Ukraine’s maritime claims against Russia in the Black Sea, Sea of Azov & Kerch Strait dispute. Proceedings began in 2016. Most demands rejected on jurisdictional grounds; no direct ruling on Crimea sovereignty but in part favourable to Russia. Russia breached environmental rules over Crimean Bridge
“The Middle East has no shortage of mediation. It has a shortage of accountability.”
At the #UNSC Open Debate on #MIPS to a lasting peace in the Middle East, #Maldives🇲🇻 emphasised that mediation must not shelter impunity, reward aggression, or erase the rights of #Palestine🇵🇸.
While UN Security Council reform remains essential for greater representativeness, Germany’s aspirations for a permanent seat face significant hurdles amid stalled negotiations and varying national and international support.
India enjoys notably broad backing as a leading candidate.
