Romania’s parliamentary election, first thoughts: Romania chooses a Bulgarian stalemate.

If current projections regarding the outcome of Romania’s parliamentary election are anywhere near accurate (and experience suggests that they are not), my hot take is that Romania is heading for a Bulgarian stalemate, with no feasible coalition possible.

(Bulgaria, remember, has held seven parliamentary elections in three years, without ever breaking its political stalemate. An eighth takes place in the new year).

The only two options currently open to the Romanian parties to form a coalition are PSD+Extremists (AUR+SOS/POT) or PSD+PNL+USR.

The first option is likely a non-starter because I can’t see this particular PSD (slightly more sensible than previous incarnations) breaking the cordon sanitaire and working with the extremist parties. Other PSDs in the past, such as Liviu Dragnea’s, wouldn’t have had any problem doing so. But I think this one is different.

The second option is unlikely because the new, de facto PNL leader Ilie Bolojan has ruled out governing with the PSD, while 99 per cent of USR voters would spontaneously combust with rage if the party too cabinet posts in any government that includes the PSD.

As such, my best estimate is that Romanians will be voting in another parliamentary election in six months time. Who runs the country in the meantime is one for the constitutional experts—likely the current PSD-PNL coalition with limited powers.

This could all change next Sunday, when Romanians vote in the second round of a presidential election. If the pro-Russian, quasi-fascist Calin Georgescu defeats Elena Lasconi of the USR, then all bets will be off, as the chances of PSD breaking the cordon sanitaire increase considerably.

Tonight, it is therefore even more crucial that Lasconi wins than it was this morning.
