Masindi Hotel, the oldest hotel in Uganda, was built in 1923 by the now defunct East Africa Railways and Harbours Company. It is Uganda’s oldest hotel. Ernest Hemingway was involved in two plane crashes at Murchison Falls and Butiaba airstrip, within the space of one week. Ernest Hemingway recovered at Masindi Hotel for 3 months. Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn stayed at Masindi Hotel whilst filming The African Queen in 1950 at Masindi Port.

AN APPEAL TO H.E. THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA ON THE IMPACT OF HEALTH-RELATED TRAVEL ADVISORIES ON TOURISM
For God and My Country
Your Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,
I write to you as a concerned Ugandan and tourism operator on behalf of many citizens whose livelihoods depend directly and indirectly on tourism.
First and foremost, we appreciate your leadership and the Government of Uganda for the strong response systems in security, health emergencies, and national stability. Uganda has built a reputation across Africa for handling emergencies with speed, discipline, and coordination. Our security and medical response teams continue to demonstrate commitment whenever crises arise.
However, Your Excellency, despite these efforts, the tourism sector continues to suffer heavily due to the way health-related communication and international publicity are managed globally. Every outbreak announcement, travel advisory, or international publication concerning diseases such as Ebola, Marburg, and previously COVID-19 immediately triggers panic cancellations from tourists and foreign partners.
As tourism operators, we are now facing:
Massive booking cancellations
Pressure to process refunds from hotels, airlines, permits, and transport providers
Loss of confidence from international markets
Reduced safari bookings and conference tourism
Financial distress among tour operators, guides, drivers, hotels, and local communities dependent on tourism
Tourism employs thousands of Ugandans directly and supports many more through hospitality, crafts, transport, agriculture, entertainment, and conservation. Yet one international publication or advisory can economically isolate Uganda for months or even years.
Your Excellency, we feel that Uganda is increasingly losing business and competitiveness in the region. While neighboring destinations such as Rwanda and Tanzania continue receiving tourists, Uganda often suffers prolonged reputational damage despite having strong emergency response capabilities.
We respectfully request your intervention and leadership in the following areas:
Strengthening Uganda’s international public relations and crisis communication strategy.
Engaging diplomatic missions and international media to provide balanced reporting about Uganda.
Supporting tourism operators affected by cancellations and financial losses.
Creating a national emergency tourism recovery framework whenever outbreaks occur.
Promoting factual communication that protects both public health and economic survival.
Your Excellency, our appeal is not against public health measures. We fully support disease prevention and national safety. Our concern is the long-term economic suffocation affecting ordinary Ugandans whose survival depends on tourism.
We believe Uganda can protect both lives and livelihoods through strategic communication, coordinated diplomacy, and stronger tourism recovery mechanisms.
I would also appreciate an opportunity to present detailed research, testimonies, and facts showing how these repeated advisories continue to affect citizens, businesses, employment, and Uganda’s tourism image internationally.
For God and My Country.
Yours faithfully,
Akampurira Rodgers ( Travel specialist )

I was glad to launch the 10th Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo at Munyonyo today. Uganda remains one of the most unique tourism destinations because of our favourable climate, rich culture, peace and natural beauty.
Regarding Ebola, there is no cause for alarm. We are applying targeted measures and continuing to work scientifically to keep people safe while keeping our economy open.
As our economy grows towards upper-middle-income status, we shall also improve the tourism experience, including friendlier visa arrangements to attract more visitors. I therefore welcome the world to come and explore Uganda, the Pearl of Africa.
Many people don’t associate our poverty levels to how we handle information.
Tourists are cancelling yet no uganda is known to have gotten Ebola. Even if we did, poverty kills more Ugandans than any disease outbreak.
Now Ugandans are being restricted from traveling in a number of countries, so they can’t do business.
Ugandans will be humiliating everywhere they because we are associating ourselves with Ebola.
If people don’t travel, business doesn’t happen, poverty compounds

President Cyril Ramaphosa might turn up next week for your swearing in!
Remind him about this discussion you guys had 7yrs ago!
PRESIDENT WILLIAM RUTO vs EAC
President @WilliamsRuto has suggested that East Africa phone calls should all work like domestic phone calls!
Great idea especially if Tanzania, Kenya , Rwanda and Ugandan leadership agrees to that.
EAC AVIATION TAXES
While the phone calls issue is important, I think even more important all East African flights should be considered as domestic flights too!
A flight between Nairobi and Entebbe will attract more than usd 100 in taxes and yet a flight between Nairobi and Mombasa will be usd 4.65.
Tanzania flight taxes are about usd 90 making a flight between Nairobi and Kilimanjaro airport usd 140 in taxes alone.
Yet usd 140 should actually be the cost of a ticket between Nairobi and Kilimanjaro airport in Tanzania.
Interestingly, the tickets between Dubai and Nairobi are cheaper than entebbe Nairobi at any time.
What East African countries are saying directly is that we better have business between us and Dubai than trading within east Africa.
The faster and affordably entrepreneurs can move between places, the more business that will be between those places and East African countries shouldn’t short change themselves.
For a country like Uganda which is landlocked stands yet expensive access by road, unless rail and aviation becomes cheaper, leaders will be spending time explaining how well we are doing with no reality on the ground.
People love moving cheaply and will be happy to spend more on doing business or accommodation or entertainment etc. As long as movement between East African countries is expensive, Intra trade will massively be affected.
I thank H.E. William Ruto and the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) for organising the Africa We Build Summit. I am glad that the AFC are speaking my language, the language of revolution.
Africa’s GDP is only about $3.6 trillion despite our vast land and population. Countries like China were once very poor but transformed themselves through discipline, clarity of purpose, and investment. Therefore, Africa’s problem is not money; it is ideological.
To the traveling family of the World; Just know that the biggest population of the World's unique Primates ( #Chimpanzee, #Mountaingorrilas, different #monkey species ) is found and resident in Uganda. The #Chimpanzee civil war happening in @kibaleforest is one of the many amazing lifestyles of these Primates. Each family of them has a rich and deep story to learn .
