But somewhere along the way, we were conditioned to believe that questioning power was dangerous, while giving power our unquestioning obedience was somehow patriotic.
No.
America was not founded
upon blind obedience
to government.
It was founded upon the radical principle that government exists to serve the People,
not the other way around.
The Declaration of Independence
established something extraordinary:
“Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it...”
Read that again.
Those words were written in 1776.
Look around today.
The veteran sleeping beneath an overpass.
The mother counting dollars at the pharmacy.
The elderly couple deciding which bill gets paid.
The family watching their belongings carried from the home they once believed was theirs.
The exhausted nurse.
The struggling farmer.
The worker who gives everything and still falls behind.
The neglected communities.
The deteriorating infrastructure.
The endless bureaucracy.
The surveillance.
The wars.
The debt.
The families burying sons and daughters beneath American flags.
Meanwhile, the institutions supposedly created to represent ordinary people become larger, richer, more complicated, more intrusive, and increasingly distant from the people living beneath them.
This is bigger than Republican versus Democrat.
Bigger than left versus right.
Bigger than whichever politician happens
to occupy an office for four years.
This is about something far older:
WHO SERVES WHOM?
Government does not grant
the People their humanity.
Government does not
own the People.
Government does not
stand above the People.
Government derives its legitimate power
from the consent of the governed.
NEVER Forget That.
Because when ordinary people stop questioning institutions, institutions rarely begin questioning themselves.
And perhaps the most dangerous society is not one where people disagree with their government.
It is one where people become convinced
they no longer have the right to.
WE THE PEOPLE were never supposed to be three decorative words on aging parchment.
They were supposed to mean something.
Maybe it's time we remembered what.
