God created our bodies to not be abused by what we put inside of it for food.
If we've neglected this over the years, now's a great time to reverse course and focus our diet.
Step one's focus shouldn't necessarily be to merely reduce calories. Why? Hunger will always win out.
Rather, the focus should be to REDUCE insulin's prevalence in the bloodstream. How? By focusing on whole foods that consist of healthy fats AND protein!
Cut carbs outside of some plant based ones (fruits, veggies, minimal starches).
Eat: EGGS! Meats (Lean-ish and never fried), natural fats like olives (try Kalamata olives if you hate other types), raw nuts--namely pistachios, walnuts, pecans, almonds, avocados, 1-2 scoops whey/day, high protein greek yogurt, cottage cheese, snag some essential amino acid (EAA) supplements.
Cook with healthy oils such as avocado oil, olive oil for low heat (up to ~370 degrees), ghee butter, normal butter at low heat, and/or coconut oil. Use only what’s needed—most go overboard here.
The simple sugars have to go: Cut cookies, ice cream, milk beyond moderate amounts (including lattes), donuts, biscuits, pastas, most breads except some limited organic sourdough, etc.
The everyday fried foods like chips (unless masa and/or avocado oil based), tortillas, chicken nuggets and the like gotta go or regularly avoided.
The everyday fats like sour cream, seed oils, and margarine gotta go.
Also, stop viewing foods like oats, rices, and peanut butter like they’re your body’s best friend. Limit these.
Change out your refrigerator and pantry and change your body.
You got this! :)
If you're a dude near 40 and anything like me, if you hit the gym, you want to grow--increased hypertrophy and added strength--maybe cut some fat. And you want to get the most juice out of the squeeze of being there, right?
Here's my tip: don't get frustrated after 6-12 months of the progress you've made that doesn't really match your expectations and then try to achieve the gains you had envisioned in this upcoming gym sesh--or in the individual sessions to come.
Nothing beats the consistency of endless small productive cycles: workout hard but don't kill yourself at our age, eat reasonably well (ample protein), sleep 7-8 hrs, take a day off between gym seshes (go walk or similar instead). And repeat--forever, Lord willing. Avoid the shortcut--your inevitable and looming tennis elbow injury is just begging for you to overextend (trust me, I know).
