Hey all it's been a minute since I tweeted here!
Is there a Mastodon instance for classical musicians that's not primarily about academia? I don't mean one excluding people in academia - just one where that's not the main thing talked about?
If so please enlighten me. Thanks!
@robbyburns has already built it. I already find the ability to hang within a silo while also being able to fully follow a subset great. Don't have to keep up with the silo but can see everything from the who I'm following subset. I'm really impressed so far.
@robbyburns So I'm not an expert yet since I'm only a few days in but it is possible to have columns for your instance, people you follow, hashtags and more. Because it is a completely open platform, if there's some functionality that you think would be good, chances are very high someone...
@robbyburns I have signed up at https://t.co/SCc2b2Kwih which is all Phish/jam band fans and that makes the "Local" feed a small group of like-minded (or at least like-interested) people which is great.
And the beauty is that you can also follow anyone outside of that instance of course.
@robbyburns Actually they can be both. There are quite a few specific community instances like https://t.co/SCc2b2Kwih or https://t.co/eNtVnz3mAM for example. Also some that are bigger and generic. But there are advantages to the community-specific ones for sure.
I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Larry Rachleff.
I only worked with him once (which happens to have been exactly 30 years today.) He profoundly changed me as a musician + a human in those two short weeks. Powerful stuff.
I wrote about it:
