I had lodged a formal complaint regarding him. He didn’t attended the section 79 meetings, he refused to read reports in preparation of the meetings. I refused to come to our focus group meetings. He never came to our oversights either. Council meetings was also not treated with respect. So good riddance

Ok let me school you , clearly you don’t research or check facts. I was in council in the previous term. The EFF is lying about Joburg’s inner city. Here are the facts.

1️⃣ The last inner-city rejuvenation plan that actually worked was under Mayor Herman Mashaba (2016–2019): the Inner City Property Release Programme.
This was not a slogan — it was approved by Council.
2️⃣ The EFF voted for it.
They supported the Council decision authorising the release of City-owned inner-city properties. You don’t get to vote YES and later deny it happened.
3️⃣ What was delivered:
• 71 inner-city buildings released
• City-owned, derelict or under-utilised assets
• Redeveloped for affordable housing, student accommodation & mixed-use
• Private capital leveraged instead of draining City finances

4️⃣ Why the model worked: it was lawful.
Most hijacked buildings are privately owned.
The City cannot seize them without court orders under Section 26 of the Constitution and the PIE Act. Mashaba worked within the law. Populism doesn’t survive court.

5️⃣ The EFF’s current claim collapses on the law.
There is no Council-approved City policy allowing MMCs to “reclaim” hijacked buildings.
Under the Municipal Systems & Structures Acts, MMCs implement policy — they do not invent powers.

6️⃣ Bottom line:
Mashaba’s approach respected the Constitution, Council authority and investors — that’s why it moved.
The EFF voted for it.
The buildings were released.
The model worked.

History isn’t negotiable.
