This morning, I am attending the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda Annual CPD Event 2026 at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, held under the theme: “Pharmacists at the Heart of Healthcare Delivery and Transformation: Advancing Research, Collaboration and Digital Innovation.”

I am pleased to join pharmacists, researchers and other healthcare stakeholders as we explore how research, collaboration and digital innovation can strengthen pharmaceutical practice and transform healthcare delivery in Uganda.

As we advance our science, technology and innovation agenda, our health professionals must remain at the centre of translating research and emerging technologies into practical solutions that improve the lives of our people.

This morning, I joined the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda Annual CPD Event 2026 at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, where I challenged pharmacists to look deeper into our heritage, biodiversity and indigenous knowledge as important sources of scientific discovery and pharmaceutical innovation.

I shared the example of communities in Rwampara and Ntungamo, where Omubirizi has traditionally been used in managing malaria and other illnesses. We must protect our forests, scientifically study such indigenous knowledge and, where evidence supports it, translate our local leaves, roots and other natural resources into validated, patented and commercially viable products.

I also shared the example of Dr. Patrick Ogwang and what becomes possible when pharmacology meets business. We should develop Ugandan health products that go beyond our borders, earn foreign exchange, create jobs, transform communities and change lives.

As we rally towards the Ten-Fold Growth Strategy, I assured the pharmacists that they are guaranteed the support and partnership of the STI Secretariat – Office of the President as we move our science from research to products and ultimately to markets.
