Cosmic Cliffs: A Wall of Creation and Destruction, 7 Light-Years Tall
This isn’t a mountain range on some distant planet.
It’s a sheer cliff face seven light-years high—taller than the distance from the Sun to Alpha Centauri—carved into the edge of a vast stellar nursery.
You’re looking at the Cosmic Cliffs, the razor-sharp rim of a star-forming cavity in the Carina Nebula (NGC 3324), 7,600 light-years from Earth. Just above the frame, out of sight, a handful of extremely young, ultra-massive stars are raging. Their blistering ultraviolet radiation and fierce stellar winds are literally boiling the interstellar medium, eating away at a towering wall of cold dust and gas.
That glowing blue fringe? It’s the searing edge where the dust is being ionized and blasted into space—cosmic erosion happening in real time. Behind the wall, the denser material is collapsing under its own gravity, giving birth to the next generation of stars. Those tiny, brilliant dots punching through the dust are newborn protostars, still wrapped in their natal cocoons.
JWST’s infrared eyes pierce the shroud that optical telescopes can’t. The colors you see are a translation: the shortest infrared wavelengths mapped to blue, the longest to red. But the structure itself is real—raw, violent, and breathtakingly beautiful.
One of the first five images released by the James Webb Space Telescope, and still unmatched for revealing star formation’s dual nature: simultaneously destructive and creative, annihilating the old to forge the new.

Tom Brady: "To be successful at anything, you don’t have to be special. You just have to be what most people aren’t: consistent, determined and willing to work for it. No shortcuts."
@Sassafrass_84 I’m father who has custody, and was awarded child support. I haven’t seen a dollar, and the mother stole the kids, and illegally withdrew them from their schools. Since I’m a dad law enforcement shrugged it off and now I’m back spending more money to get an enforcement.
@its_The_Dr If all the trump supporters would leave, the country would shut down. All that would be left are the blue haired gender study graduates that could only get a job at Starbucks, and still find away to screw that up. As far as will smith goes, he lost his man card a long time ago.
