Insane things rape victims I've worked with as an advocate have been told by the police when they tried to report:

"It's a gray area because you said had a drink."
"If you woke up to a naked woman you would have sex with her, too, as a man. They sound like normal guys." (Her attackers gave her a concussion btw.)
"If he had bought you flowers would you still call it rape?"
"Sometimes men just misread signals."
"Everyone including you needs to take some responsibility here."
"Save your bedsheets for us to pick up later." (Years went by; they never did.)
"Do you really want to do this to your life and his life?"
"This is going to take years, have you thought about that?"
"[Date rape] isn't violent rape, like rape-rape."
"If you're reluctant to talk to us how do you think court is going to be?"
"Why would you wait a whole day to come here?"
"These guys don't sound like criminals."

And some police have pressured victims into going on a date or sleeping with them, didn't ever follow up or attempt to interview the guy, didn't arrive at the hospital until many hours after being called, refused to let a victim advocate be with the victim as required by Marsy's law...

Police indifference, hostility, and victim-blaming toward victims is the norm, not the exception, and the a key point these cases never even make it past reporting.

During my sophomore year of college, our botany professor was this incredibly stern, terrifying woman who never smiled. One day during a massive lecture, her phone started ringing. She usually kicked people out for that, so we all froze. She looked at her screen, sighed, put it on speaker, and this tiny, cheerful voice said, "Hi grandma, I found a cool leaf!" This old woman’s face completely melted. She spent ten minutes of class time letting her five-year-old grandson describe a maple leaf over the projector mic. It was the only time she ever showed us mercy.

The man who invented the operation that saves babies born with blue-baby syndrome had no medical degree, no college degree, and was listed on the payroll as a JANITOR.

He guided the first operation from a stool behind the surgeon's shoulder, telling him where to cut.

Vivien Thomas. He had been saving to study medicine when the 1929 crash wiped out his savings and the bank holding them.

He took a job as a lab assistant at Vanderbilt for a janitor's wage, because that was the classification available.

Within a couple of years he was running experimental surgery — developing techniques, performing operations on his own, training surgeons.

He moved to Johns Hopkins with Alfred Blalock in 1941, where he was still paid as a janitor and had to enter through a back door.

He was the only Black man in that building not carrying a mop.

He worked out the surgical fix for tetralogy of Fallot — the condition killing infants who turned blue and died — and built the instruments for it.

The first operation on a child was in 1944. Blalock, who had never done the procedure, asked Thomas to stand behind him and talk him through it.

The surgeons on the paper became world famous. Thomas was not credited.

Hopkins hung his portrait in 1971 and gave him an honorary doctorate in 1976. Generations of surgeons he personally trained insisted on it.

He was paid as a cleaner while inventing heart surgery.

Hey so Cornell police report logs show there was another rape reported September 23rd, 2026. Also in August, Cornell's medical school/academic medical center agreed to a settlement totaling over $1 billion because one of their urologists was sexually assaulting patients and they failed to handle it.

This has been, and stays being, a problem that is central to Cornell and how it's ran.
