It was inevitable that Jason Arday would be forced to resign from @Cambridge_Uni. But this was never about him. In fact, he has been a godsend, providing living evidence of the unbelievable level of corruption and sheer stupidity that has infected elite institutions.

Cambridge can't just turn the page and pretend that nothing happened, or that Arday was just one bad apple. If an apple so visibly worm-eaten can be elevated to the very top of the profession without anyone bothering to inspect it, that tells you more about the "basket" than about that particular apple.

There must be accountability. If universities ever want to win back the trust of the public, other heads must roll. Take Prof. @HilaryCremin, Head of Faculty at @Cambridge_Uni and Arday's direct boss, who had this to say about the guy:

"The board of electors on your interview were absolutely unanimous: we are so lucky to have you. You are the best in the world in terms of the research that you do."

And after evidence of plagiarism came to light:

"[W]e remain immensely proud of Prof Arday's achievements and scholarship, and... he has our full support. [...] During our meeting Prof Arday spoke movingly about his ongoing experiences of direct and indirect racism."

She's not the only one, as her comment about "unanimity of the board" shows. Legions of distinguished academics have been fawning over Arday for years, despite the abysmal quality of his work. Worse still, thousands have signed an open letter expressing their "unwavering support" for Arday and accusing his critics of "racism," after the evidence of his serial fraud and plagiarism had already come to light (including serious scholars like @sbaroncohen).

For Arday to become the youngest Black professor ever at one of the most prestigious universities in the world, literally hundreds of administrators, editors, mentors and colleagues must have turned a blind eye to the evidence of intellectual mediocrity and fraud, selecting him over genuinely qualified and talented scholars (including Black ones who didn't toe their ideological DEI line about "institutional racism" and all the usual nonsense).

The unsettling truth is that universities are full of Jason Ardays. Most are simply a little more subtle in their deception and chicanery. A little less obviously rotten.
