Alabama roster rankings (No. 11-20)…
11) Edwards: Tremendous talent. 6-6, 268lb. sophomore who was thrown into the fire early as a true freshman despite not enrolling until the summer. Injuries to Lewis and, eventually, Cuevas pushed him into a bigger role than expected. Growing pains were evident, especially as a blocker, but the coaching staff loves the upside. Brings a balanced skillset. Expect improvement in the run game while also being more of a featured piece in the passing game.
12) Simmons: Another player who contributed earlier than expected despite not enrolling until the summer. Injuries to Keenan and Beaman paved the way for an early starting job until Keenan returned, and he impressed in that role before settling in as top rotational piece. Better disruptor than I expected while also showing surprising maturity. Was more of a 1T/NT in Year 1, but we expect early-down 3T in Year 2. Hate he missed the spring. Was somewhat worried about ranking him this high, but path to a prominent role is there.
13) Morgan: Heat-seeking missile. Pound-for-pound one of the most physical guys on the team. Have questions about his man coverage, but emerging leader and clear tone-setter. Staff loves McDonald, but Morgan is now the primary Husky. Think he has “chess piece” appeal too. Love him.
14) Delgatty: My second highest OL behind Carroll at No. 3. Has attacked any size/strength concerns by putting in significant work in the weight room. Might still need adjustment period now that he’s playing a much higher level of competition, but the movement skills and tenacity are infectious. Reportedly a great communicator. Bama will certainly miss Brailsford, but think they did an excellent job finding his successor.
15) Sabb: Not flashy, but possesses a balanced skillset with size, physicality and quality cover traits — especially as an underneath Robber. Has plenty of experience playing alongside Hubbard, giving the Tide one of the best and most experienced safety tandems in the nation. Others may have higher ceilings, but Sabb is another third-level field general who the staff clearly covets.
16) Hill: DUDE alert. Excellent edge-setter with speed-to-power upside, but hasn’t seen enough pass rush opportunities to know if he has “primary pass rusher” upside or if he’s strictly a complementary piece. Versatility to play on or off the ball, even as an apex defender, will be valued by Wommack. Can’t rank him too high with Pierre being the primary Wolf, but if the spring was any indication, expect significant backfield disruption in Year 2.
17) Lloyd: Third highest OL. Only 41 career snaps, but possesses tremendous upside. Multi-sport athlete (baseball and basketball) in HS. Doesn’t have elite length, but he’s long enough with good size (6-7, 317). Excellent mover with the necessary skillset to thrive in a DeBoer/Grubb offense.
18) Ford: One of my favorite offseason additions. Another massive TE body (6-6, 267) who will help elevate the run game. Untapped potential as a pass catcher, but his blocking is why he was a priority. Ability to be effective inline, as a move HB/FB and as a flexed option to improve your perimeter blocking. Assignment sound. Still might not be high enough on him.
19) Sanders: Perfect DeBoer/Grubb fit. Biggest strength is his ability to pull and block in space. Still developing his pass protection, but has necessary athleticism. Would like to see more consistency climbing to the second level, but all the tools are there. Should eventually give UA one of the best IOL trios in CFB alongside Carroll, Delgatty.
20) Crowell: Elite talent. Don’t think he’ll lead Bama in carries, touches or snaps necessarily, but predict he’ll be the most effective of the bunch. Vision, burst and contact balance are next level. Strong option as a receiver. Just needs to show he can pass protect. Really wish he would’ve been healthy in the spring, but I expect him to eventually find his way into a prominent role. Game-changer.
