We need to fix the internet, not the tech giants. The problem isn't just that Zuck is really bad at being the unelected pope-emperor of the digital lives of 3,000,000,000 people - it's that the job of "pope-emperor of 3,000,000,000 people" should be abolished.

Today, we celebrate 25 years of Democracy Now! with highlights from our coverage over the years, including from our very first show on Feb. 19, 1996. Here's how it all began.
Facebook and Twitter are profoundly culpable. A future at their mercy is intolerable. They must permanently end Trump’s access to the global info bloodstream. Jan 20 is not enough. They don’t have to love democracy, just cravenly respond to new political winds. @FBoversight 2/3
Happy Birthday to #MaxRoach who was born on this day in 1925!
"Max Roach was a consummate artist, forever evolving while working on new concepts. His bands spanned over fifty years and changed the way we hear music." - Jerome Jennings (@Romey216)
@TrevorFSmith No, they can't be given that much credit. It's when public perception has shifted far enough that it's less profitable to platform the fascists - the market risks now outweigh the benefits
"We desperately need omnibus privacy legislation that stops companies like Facebook from harvesting people’s data and using it to micro-target hate and lies directly into the minds of people most susceptible to them."
The echo chamber is the thing. Again, we've all been talking about it for a while but we're realizing the insane, brutal, tribal power of it now.
And *it will get worse* if we don't redouble our efforts to stop it.
This is exactly the wrong takeaway. This isn't about mental illness. It's about a massive online echo chamber with the power to convince all kinds of people from all walks of life to reject basic tenets of reality.
Commercial/surveillance social media platforms deserve much harsher criticism and need our ongoing concerted efforts to demand more fundamental change

Twitter, Facebook, et al are just as much rats fleeing the ship as Chao and DeVos. There's no principled stand or substantive fix here, just a cynical response to market sentiment
