After a couple of weeks of stewing, just couldn't shake the fact that Alex Ovechkin appeared in a pro-Putin ad, and that it would color how people viewed him -- forever.
On his 22nd season, his choice -- and his legacy.

Article of mine was published today in @washingtonpost . In it,I describe why Russian citizens—led by Ovechkin—are currently acting as promoters of Russia's imperialist war. Also, how the @NHL is contributing to the war's prolongation and a higher death toll https://t.co/HpZcGm84kQ
By the way, on these very days, September 25–27, 1938, the Soviet punitive authorities placed the great Ukrainian Serhiy Korolyov on a list of arrested persons slated for execution.
Stalin’s NKVD arrested the talented aviator and engineer in Moscow, in his apartment, tearing him from the arms of his sobbing, shocked wife after a humiliating search. The charges (traditional for the era of the “Great Terror”) were “sabotage” and “espionage.”
Korolev was brutally beaten, with his interrogators forcing him to confess. The beatings were so severe that for many years afterward he was unable to raise his arms above his head. And once, an “investigator” shattered his jaw with a terrible blow from a glass decanter. And many years later, it appears that the jaw, improperly fused after the torture, became fatal to him.
But he survived, against all odds, even though he was soon slowly dying of starvation in the freezing barracks of the Gulag -- surviving so that years later he would become the mysterious unnamed “Chief Designer” behind the first launch of an artificial satellite in history.
And then, the first human being in space. And soon after that, so that one of the very first things to be heard in space would be a famous lyrical Ukrainian song -- his favorite, which he carried within him throughout his life.
There is a chapter about him in my book (I think it's among the best), as part of an entire section calle “A Great Day For Freedom,” about three great Ukrainians whose lives in many ways illustrate the fate of Ukraine itself in the mid-to-late twentieth century: the space dreamer Serhiy Korolyov, the poet-martyr Vasyl Stus, and the political harbinger Vyacheslav Chornovil.
