A fabulous @MaREIcentre symposium brought together our researchers for two days of deep discussion on our impact on society, communities and industry.
Incredible to think we will graduate our 300th PhD next year; at 4 years per PhD that is 1200 years of innovation and hard work.
Our President @johbees in deep conversation with our latest PhD graduate Dr @AngaHackula at the @MaREIcentre symposium.
John delivered the opening address on the importance of communities, industry and policy in climate mitigation.

Two-phase anaerobic digestion can produce both VFAs and biogas. VFAs such as butyric acid can be processed to butanol, a sustainable transport fuel. Biogas produced on-demand can fulfil the electrical demand of large industry at peak hours.

Latest @MaREIcentre paper on distillery #biorefinery led by @AngaHackula & @davvywall found that lower organic loading rates (OLR) produced higher levels of caproic acid, while higher OLRS produced higher levels of valeric acid

We must move beyond the mentality of appearing to be concerned about the climate crisis, while lacking the courage to effect substantial change. If the measures we could adopt now are costly, the cost will be all the more heavy the longer we wait. #DRRDay#LaudateDeum
@theAliceRoberts This is one of the two sewage plants in Copenhagen. It has the capacity to clean sewage water from 750.000 people. It's so effective that people can bathe safely in the harbour.
The waste is used to make biogas, supplying 60% of the gas needed in Copenhagen.
Pure win win.
@MaREIcentre examined biochar supplemented two phase digestion.
Results showed:
With biochar increased VFA production by 57% as compared to without biochar.
Two phase digestion > single phase
With biochar > without biochar

Biogas is not just about energy. It is a #circulareconomy#energy & #environment system, which treats waste, reduces fugitive emissions, produces biofertiliser & food grade CO2.
@MaREIcentre paper assesses how marginal abatement cost can fairly reflect such a system.

The financial and environmental performance of anaerobic digestion systems change depending on the system boundary. A single value for marginal abatement cost may not accurately represent the variability of AD.
