If you look at your high street these days and think ‘who asked for this?’, you’re not alone.

I’m doing something about it. We’re giving local people and councils more control over what opens, and tougher powers to crack down on businesses that aren’t good for our communities.

For too long, Westminster has stood by while our high streets declined. That ends now.

Thank you to the brave firefighters tackling the ongoing wildfire in Hampshire. My department is supporting the local response teams and we are monitoring the incident closely.

There are more than 120 firefighters working to prevent further fire spread.

We have 10 fire engines and 13 off-road vehicles in attendance, and we plan to maintain this number until at least midnight, although it is likely to be required for longer.

It’s vital that existing social housing stock is allocated fairly and efficiently to those most in need.

But we know these proposals would not improve how social housing is allocated.

Why? Because when the Tories consulted on them in early 2024, extensive feedback made clear that they would not only fail to deliver any meaningful improvements to the allocation of social housing but would cost a fortune, increase the numbers of people in expensive temporary accommodation, and risk harm to communities.

Eligibility for social housing is already tightly controlled. If a person’s visa means that they cannot access state benefits or local authority housing assistance, they are not eligible for social housing.

While the Tories spew out unserious and unworkable gimmicks as they descend further down the Reform rabbit hole, this Labour government is working to undo the engineered decline of social housing they facilitated by once again building social and council homes at scale.

No amount of headline-chasing, or following Reform to the extremes, can conceal the damage the Tories did to housing in this country.

People without ILR are already ineligible for social housing, so the Tories are targeting refugees and long-term UK residents who have contributed to this country but are not British citizens, including NHS staff.

It would leave more families at risk of homelessness, while driving up the use of temporary accommodation at taxpayers’ expense.

Too often, illness is only half the challenge, with people forced to wait too long and fight too hard to get the help they need.

Today, we’re announcing a major expansion of NHS mental health services so people can get help earlier and closer to home.

Two weeks ago today, I admitted that politics has not been working for you and that we all need to raise our game.

I meant it.

So here's just some of what we've announced in the first fortnight:

✅ New national drive to end rough sleeping
✅ Tax cut on energy bills
✅ £2 cap on bus fares in England
✅ Record numbers of NCA officers deployed to tackle gangs behind small boat crossings
✅ 20% cut in business rates for thousands of pubs, clubs, and music venues
✅ Number 10 North, driving power out of Westminster and into every postcode across the country
✅ 14-year-olds will have early access to technical education, skills training and connections with employers
✅ Plan to fix our broken social care system
✅ Investment in our nuclear deterrent, supporting 22,000 apprenticeships
✅ Local mayors will get a share of income tax

This is just the start. I know a fortnight does not fix a country.

But I said I would do things differently, and I am.

The Addison Act, which marked the birth of modern council housing in the UK, received Royal Assent 107 years ago today.

Last year, we delivered the highest number of council homes in over 30 years.

Under @andyburnham we're going to go further to deliver a new era of council housebuilding.

Today @andyburnham has set out the first step in our plan to rewire this country, building a better future where power is no longer hoarded in Westminster but put in people’s hands.

Bringing an end to the begging-bowl culture, making sure local leaders have the tools they need to drive the change that communities have been crying out for.

We need every region to be firing on all cylinders if we want good growth in every postcode, and we will do everything in our power to make that a reality.

Andy Burnham has announced he will bring forward the Casey Review on how to deliver a "national care service" to next year.

It comes after he announced plans yesterday to tackle the more than a million young people not in education, employment or training.

This photo takes me right back. Working as a home carer for Stockport Council.

It was my first proper job. A special job. But one of the toughest I've ever done.

I know what it’s like to wash someone, cook for them, and make time to actually listen to them before rushing off to the next call with the clock ticking.

I know how it feels to graft hard day and night doing tough, physical shifts for wages I struggled to get by on.

That's why I've always fought for a fairer deal for social care.

And I'm proud we started laying the foundations for change through the Employment Rights Act with the framework for the first ever fair pay agreement for adult social care workers.

But that’s also why the Prime Minister's announcement today matters so much.

A National Care Service could be genuinely transformative.

For decades, governments have kicked this issue down the road because they have seen it as too risky, too difficult and too complicated.

That changes today.
