In 1992, Kenneth Matiba of Kiharu may not have known what was happening, but Ndindi Nyoro knows the history. In 1992, Moi knew he was going to lose the election. He told Njiru and his advisers, “Let’s pack and go home. We cannot win against a united Mt Kenya.”
At the time, Kibaki had formed the popular DP party, just as Rigathi Gachagua has now built the popular DCP.
Moi’s advisers told him to use money to divide the Mt Kenya vote by encouraging Matiba to run for president against Kibaki. Matiba was then in the UK. Moi’s people went to the government printer and ordered thousands of posters saying “Matiba for President,” even though Matiba was not in Kenya and did not know what was happening.
When Matiba returned from the UK, he found a huge crowd waiting for him at the airport. Many of them were Kalenjin who had been brought in by buses. Matiba was excited by the reception and did not question where the crowd had come from. When journalists asked him whether he would run for president, he said, “Let the people decide.”
From that point, Matiba’s campaign began. Moi's team told someone to go and tell Matiba to go and Start his Campaign in Nakuru. They took him to Nakuru, Rift Valley, where huge crowds turned up to welcome and cheer him organized by Moi. When people from Mt Kenya saw the reception Matiba was receiving, they became convinced that he was loved across the country.
Today, the same strategy is being used with Ndindi Nyoro to divide the Mt Kenya vote. That is why I say Matiba did not know he was following a script created by Moi, but Ndindi Nyoro knows this history. If he does not know, then he has certainly heard about what happened during Matiba’s 1992 presidential campaign.
When Ndindi Nyoro launched his party, he said he would start his campaigns in Uasin Gishu, Bomet, Nandi and Kericho. Why start there? Because large crowds will be brought to his meetings to cheer him, creating the impression that he is extremely popular in the Rift Valley.
The people of Mt Kenya will then see those crowds and say, “Look, Ndindi Nyoro is loved everywhere. When other leaders go there, they are chased away or attacked, but Ndindi is welcomed. Therefore, we should support him here at home because the whole country loves him.”
That is why I believe history is about to repeat itself.
In 1992, Kibaki received about 1 million votes, while Matiba received about 1.4 million votes. Together, they had about 2.4 million votes, while Moi received around 1.9 million. The lesson is clear: Moi won because he successfully divided the Mt Kenya vote.~ Senator Karungo Thangwa.
