60,000 water quality tests. One every 35 minutes for four years straight.
That’s the incredible milestone reached by the Water Quality Monitoring Network, powered by more than 800 dedicated volunteers across the country.
Their data is helping reveal the true extent of river pollution. In 2024/25, 41% of samples breached good ecological status for phosphate, while 50% showed signs of nitrate pollution.
But once pollution is revealed, it can be challenged. Local groups and the Angling Trust campaigns team use this evidence to push Government, regulators and water companies to take action.

The new season of The Last Salmon podcast is here.
Presented by Angling Trust Ambassador @TheJimMurray, episode one brings together Angling Trust Ambassador @marinagibson25, TV fishing legend @MattHayesfish and renowned salmon campaigner @valgerdurarnad for a powerful conversation on the future of wild salmon.
Together, they explore what the UK, Norway and Iceland are getting right and wrong when it comes to salmon conservation, covering everything from fish handling and catch and release to aquaculture, pollution, spawning habitat and public awareness.
Wild salmon are one of the world’s most extraordinary migratory species, but they are under serious threat. This episode asks what more needs to be done, and why the fight to save them must reach far beyond angling.

NEW BLOG: Mental Health Awareness Week: Why Time Spent Fishing Matters 🎣
In todays world, finding simple ways to slow down, reconnect & breathe has never been more important.
For many people across Wales & beyond, fishing offers exactly that.

Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough 🎉📷Sir #DavidAttenborough’s warning on freshwater could not be more relevant to rivers today. Healthy rivers need clean water, enough flow, and habitats where fish and wildlife can thrive. But pollution, over-abstraction and weak regulation are pushing many of them beyond recovery. Anglers see the damage first-hand. That is why we are campaigning for urgent action to protect our rivers, lakes and seas. #AnglersAgainstPollution #LoveFishingLoveNature

"Forever chemicals” are building up in waterways.
The Government must turn off the tap.
A new report warns that PFAS pollution poses long-term risks to wildlife and human health. These chemicals do not break down, once they are in the environment, they stay there.
Anglers are already seeing the consequences. That is why the Angling Trust is calling for urgent action to control these toxic substances.

Protect our waters – Stop invasive species spreading
The carnivorous Black Sea shrimp poses a serious threat to Britain’s freshwater fish and could badly impact native fish species and disrupt the food chain they rely on.
“If they break out, fishing is going to be severely impacted,” comments Mark Owen, Head of Fisheries at the Angling Trust. Read more in The Telegraph: https://t.co/XiOv8xYyFa
Shrimp can withstand being out of water for several days, so following the Check, Clean and Dry guidance will reduce transfers. You can help protect our rivers and lakes by making sure your fishing gear, boats and equipment are clean & dry before moving between waters.

Killer shrimp are tiny but aggressive. They attack and kill native species including fish eggs.
Help prevent the spread of these and other invasive species, remember to #CheckCleanDry your kit after you leave the water.

Alan Blair tells us that fish care is more than just about unhooking and returning fish properly.
Always check clean and dry your nets, mats, waders and other tackle between sessions. Don't be the culprit - CHECK, CLEAN & DRY.

A special mention for Martin & Kara who have been attending the group for several months. The 🎣 sessions have helped them both so much with their mental health & wellbeing. They are both now fishing together every week & have recently joined a local syndicate water. @AnglingTrust

A new parliamentary petition is calling for a national debate on the option of bringing water companies into public ownership. It’s an issue many anglers and members of the public feel strongly about after decades of failed privatisation of the water industry. As the Angling Trust has long campaigned, the water services industry clearly needs urgent reform, stronger regulation, and investment in infrastructure to protect rivers, fisheries, and the environment.
If you believe the public should have the choice to return the water services industry to public ownership, add your name to the petition: https://t.co/FdIiGvVpzl

A few shots from a recent visit to Maesteg, where we filmed with the Llynfi Valley Angling Association on their delightful stretch of river. #fishinginwales
Filmed at Tewkesbury.
Driven by instinct. Under the moonlight the magic happens underwater. One of nature's greatest migrations is under way. The Glass eel migration. Sadly many will perish and never continue there migration.

Protect pets, rivers and wildlife - urgent action needed
A growing body of scientific evidence is showing that fipronil and imidacloprid, chemicals in common flea and tick treatments, are contaminating UK rivers and wildlife.
Both were banned for agricultural use by 2018 but are still widely sold as spot-on and collar treatments, often used on a monthly and bought over the counter.
Today, we’ve backed a letter to Government calling for:
• A clear timeline for reviewing how these products are sold
• Moving flea and tick treatments containing fipronil and imidacloprid to prescription-only
We’re also urging wider reform to ensure these chemicals are properly monitored in waterways and their environmental impact fully assessed.
