Never expected a coach as supposedly sophisticated as Tuchel to be reduced to such agricultural tactics at that level. Charles Hughes stuff. England had a deep enough talent pool to see the game out productively but their approach after scoring was backwards.
Compare how Spain played after scoring against France with how England played. Spain controlled the game and refused to let France get back in. England willingly gave the ball up and said, "Let's see if Messi and Argentina can break us down for 40 minutes."
This is what Arteta football caused.
1-0 and park the bus for 40+ minutes.
Everyone rooting for England would have coached this match better. Argentina reinforced with attacking players and he continued to defend.
Crosses will only lead to rebound! Obvious tactic, mumu Tuchel.
2 - There are just two occasions of a team scoring first in the semi-final but not reaching the final of the FIFA World Cup in the 21st century – both of them are England (vs Croatia in 2018 and Argentina in 2026).
Familiar.
🎯 I have an aversion to excess chess analogies, but England going up a goal and then pulling back against Messi instead of continuing to attack was like going up a pawn and then trying to play passive defense against Mikhail Tal!

7 - England have been eliminated every time they have faced a top 10 ranked nation in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup since 1998 (7/7).
Obstacle.
Watch Spain at 1-0 last night. That’s courage. That’s bravery. And then watch England at 1-0. What’s the difference?
We are a better team than Argentina, I’ve no doubt in my mind. But we deserved to get beat in the end. In fact, it could have been 4-1.
Bringing on 3 defenders at 1-0 up. What message does that send? I wrote it in my Daily Mail column after the Mexico game. Until we understand that courage and bravery is controlling possession under pressure and not booting / heading it up the field 40 yards then this will always be the end result.
We led the game in 4 of these as well.
Maybe the mentality, or tactics, or belief, or players or whatever it is l, will really never be there.
Maybe i should just accept it, would be a whole lot easier than going through this every 2 years.
The feeling of hurt and heartbreak spawned by England’s defeat in the World Cup semi-final to Argentina will be all too familiar to supporters.
So too will the scoreline...
