Left Sonic actually looks a bit simpler to draw from other perspectives, because the shapes are a bit simpler to imagine from different angles.
Dramatic angles matter, but Sonic is so heavily stylized you can't take that out of the equation for him

I'm not one for style guides or strict references, I usually trust my instincts.
But the right illustration is clearly better, and I couldn't immediately spot why. The left illustration is passable until you stare.

There's a reason why Sonic fans argue design details to apparent exhaustion.
When the smallest stuff slips, the whole design suffers significantly, but it's in a subtle way that can be hard to voice
