An interesting short that doesn't get talked about that much: Ub Iwerks' SKELETON FROLIC (1937), a color twist on his SKELETON DANCE animation for Disney back in 1929. It's not as classic as the original, but the colors and animation are quite nice and it's good spooky fun.
Apparently that the mean jokes and episodes are good. Seems like a lot of folks are bothered by stuff like Town and Out, or when they beat up that clown. My take is that the show would absolutely not be the same without this edge. You absolutely need the sugar AND spice!
@WardenDean I wonder if the backgrounds in the pilot had some paint or if they were done entirely with colored pencils. In the early seasons, they used colored pencils layered on top of paint, but it looks different in the pilot.
