"The judiciary should play a critical role in safeguarding democratic accountability+public confidence in the rule of law. As the appeal proceeds, authorities should ensure transparency, uphold due process, protect rights guaranteed under constitution," @aniewang@hrw
A court judgment ordering @SERAPNigeria to pay damages to security officials over alleged defamation tied to claims of an unlawful office invasion raises concerns about civic freedoms in #Nigeria. Defamation cases shouldn't be used to stifle critics. https://t.co/stF1o4sDIs
Scores of civilians were reportedly killed and many more injured when the Nigerian military conducted airstrikes against insurgents at a market in Yobe State, Nigeria.
Any harm to civilians should be transparently addressed.
The recent deadly attack in Jos reflects persistent violence & insecurity in northern Nigeria, where killings, kidnappings & limited state protection leave communities vulnerable as everyday people continue to pay the price. https://t.co/pYYGUxfbcX
#BurkinaFaso 🧵
New @hrw report describes how all warrying parties – gvt forces, VDPs and JNIM – have made the killing of civilians a key tactic of their strategies.
They have all committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in complete impunity.

#Nigeria: Maiduguri Bombings Show New Threat to Civilians
“The bombings in Maiduguri lay bare the extreme and ongoing danger civilians in northeastern Nigeria face from armed groups. Authorities need to protect civilians," @aniewang
https://t.co/pcB5u8swMT
#Nigeria- Recent bombings of civilian-populated areas in Maiduguri are apparent war crimes & have heightened fears of a renewed onslaught by the #BokoHaram JAS faction. Authorities should urgently strengthen civilian protection. New from @hrw https://t.co/JpkzvVEa5r
The US has deployed troops to #Nigeria, with reports of 200 more to come. While security cooperation could help counter insurgency & banditry, it should prioritize transparency, accountability & human rights with clear safeguards & oversight. https://t.co/3t44pXjRRo
I was on @AJEnglish last night to speak on the #WoroMassacre in Kwara State, which bore the hallmarks of a JAS attack, notably the Sadiku-led cell responsible for Northwest and Northcentral Nigeria.
Sadly, this was another avoidable government failure to protect citizens. The threat in that axis is not new. So, there was no excuse not to anticipate, sooner or later, that such an attack would happen.
Right now, unfortunately, the question to ask is, WHERE NEXT?
#Nigeria: No parent should fear a child won’t return from school. The mass kidnappings of over 300 in Kebbi & Niger show schoolchildren remain prime targets amid rising insecurity. Authorities should ensure their release & protect schools. New from @hrw https://t.co/omQxDZj0Ou
Gunmen have abducted at least 25 students and killed a teacher in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria.
The latest kidnapping underscores the Nigerian authorities' continuing failure to protect children and communities from escalating insecurity.
#Cameroon
Post-election period marred with violence, with at least 4 killed allegedly by security forces, dozens injured, hundreds arrested.
Authorities should immediately instruct security forces to not resort to violence against protesters, @hrw

The #US is greenlighting another multibillion-dollar arms sale to #Nigeria, ignoring the military’s abusive record. US law bars support to forces tied to human rights violations.Congress should require real accountability & rights safeguards before approval https://t.co/yz0mDzu900
#Nigeria: On June 21, a suicide bomber detonated an IED at a crowded fish market in Konduga, Borno State, killing at least 12. This is the first such attack in 2025 amid a resurgence of suicide bombings since last year in the Northeast #BokoHaram conflict. https://t.co/jHk5GpJ7vr
Insecurity in #Nigeria is not just about the strength of terrorist/criminal groups or the mobility of bandits, it is also about a security system that is slow to respond, prone to error & increasingly disconnected from the people it is meant to serve; https://t.co/vpUqayCW7P
@HRW spoke to a man whose sister and two children were burned alive in the Yelewata attack. These chilling testimonies expose the horrific reality of such violence and the need for urgent action. https://t.co/hOih0ZAyxd #Nigeria
#Nigeria:As President Tinubu visits Benue today to commiserate over the killing of over 100 in the Yelewata attack,he should prioritize engagement to strengthen security in vulnerable communities and ensure justice & accountability for the heinous crimes.

In Nigeria, everyday food is becoming a luxury. Inflation driven by poor policies & weak social protection is pushing millions deeper into poverty.Authorities should build a robust, inclusive, rights based social security system to support all.
