"For the FIRST TIME in more than 75 years INDIA has raised the issue of the plight of the people of Pakistan Occupied Gilgit and Baltistan (POGB) in the United Nations forum"

Dear Friends,

I am extremely happy to inform my countrymen and countrywomen from India and other parts of the world that for the FIRST TIME in last 7 decades, the issue of the plight of the people of Pakistan Occupied Gilgit and Baltistan (PoGB) was raised by India on the forum of United Nations.

It gives me even more pleasure that this was done by your friend and an ethnic Koshur speaking Indian Kashmiri Muslim from India's Kashmir Valley. I "intervened" on behalf of India at the 57th session of UNHRC at Geneva, Switzerland and spoke about the miserable plight of the people of PoGB.

While there have been intervention on PoGB at the UNHRC by dissidents of the region living in exile, it was the first time that an Indian and that too an Indian Kashmiri Muslim had "intervened" and spoken about the plight of the people of PoGB at UNHRC.

PoGB is part of what we in India call - "PoK", a composite term used for two distinct ethno-linguistic sub regions of former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir that was ruled by Hindu Dogra Maharaja Hari Singh on the eve of Independence of India from British rule.

Unfortunately, two sub regions of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, namely - POJK and POGB came under illegal occupation of newly created Pakistan.

Strategically located PoGB is an extremely remote and little known part of PoK, which is home to the world's second highest mountain peak - Mount Godwin Austin, aka "K2". PoGB is also home to Earth's largest reservoir of freshwater and glacier systems outside Antartica. PoGB is the only land border that Pakistan shares with China and it is only because of this Geo-Strategic advantage, Pakistan has cowardly used China as a shield against India.

Loss of PoGB, which rightfully belongs to India, has put our nation at great disadvantage. PoGB was India's gateway to resource rich CENTRAL ASIA.

Unlike the people of PoJK, who are culturally & linguistically close to the people of India's Jammu region, the people of PoGB are a complex mix of different racial, ethnic, linguistic and religious back ground, which an outsider, who is not from PoGB cannot grasp easily.

I have a personal connection with POGB as my forefathers, 'Beigh's" of Ishkoman valley in POGB's Ghizer district bordering Tajikistan had migrated to India's Kashmir Valley hundreds of years back.

It was therefore even more special for me to "intervene" on behalf of India on PoGB.

Following is the transcript of my speech: 👇

"The plight of the people in Pakistan Occupied Gilgit-Baltistan or POGB under the Pakistani regime is deeply troubling.

The region has been suffering from grave human rights violations, systemic oppression, and severe suppression by the Pakistani authorities.

In POGB, which is part of the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and Pakistan's only Shia and Ismaili majority administrative region, the local population has been enduring widespread discrimination and marginalization.

There have been numerous reports of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and arbitrary detentions. The recent surge in protests in POGB against unfair taxation and resource exploitation have been met with a brutal crackdown by security forces.

The Pakistani regime’s response has been stifle dissent, silence activist, and curtail basic freedom, highlighting a disturbing pattern of human rights abuses.

The international community must not ignore the suffering of the people in PoGB. The Pakistani state’s inaction and active participation in these human rights violations demand urgent attention.

We must call on Pakistan to end its oppressive policies, ensure accountability for human rights abuses and uphold dignity and rights of all its citizens."
