I am not going to have time to update this thread next year. Thank you so much for using it-I hope it was helpful. All my resources can still be accessed on https://t.co/L7MxDEoE9O and I will not be dekeyibg the account @Team_English1@LitdriveUK
@astroaquaria All she did? Fired twice in a small town makes her utterly unemployable in those days- and it was pure jealousy and wrath. Yes, she regrets it, but don’t underestimate the damage done by her arrogance. Truly her mother’s daughter in the early pages!
very few seem to see the petulant envy of a spoiled young lady as a key element in the suicide. Is this because Sheila repents and ends the play as one of the 'good guys'? Does her later behaviour absolve her of guilt for the action which really precipitates the downward spiral?
A note to all English HODs: @themassolit has a brilliant series of short lectures about the text. Taken with their excellent A Level material, it is well worth the £400 pa
Birling background. To Eric - the public-school-and-varsity life - Birlings use of the 2nd person pronoun: 'you've had' shows how Eric is a step up socially from Birling's upbringing. Do we detect envy here? Or a recognition that it was not worth the cost of the education?
Birling character: Act 1: a man has to make his own way - has to look after himself- and his family too. The dashes suggest a thought process - family is an afterthought. Selfish.
@judinella Take over in what way? From the outset Eric shows more elements of social responsibility than anyone. In Priestley’s model youth = socialism = good... Gerald is the next in terms of age... E is established before Sh, which I think is why JBP dies not dwell on ‘rape’ idea.
Sheila: is she as converted as she seems?
I act 2: 'you mustn't try to build a wall between us and that girl...'
Why 'that girl'? why not Eva? or her? ' That girl' is demonstrative and feels accusatory. Is she still aware of a class divide? does she still harbour envy?
Does Gerald prove the point about the young being 'more impressionable'? His return to selfish capitalist values and eagerness to find a loophole suggest that as a man in his 30s he is already too old to be easily swayed.
Here’s a great page for development of character: G is calm in the face of the wrathful Birlings and Sheila’s recognition of the social responsibility theme develops further...
When addressing contexts, do not confuse the accepted behaviours of the context of creation (1944/5) with our own behaviours. To show Gerald as a vile cad who would be rightly castigated in a post #metoo society is subtle and strong....
if you also show an awareness of the attitudes of the contemporary audience for whom Priestley was writing - https://t.co/KMwPwkssEk - and also the utterly male dominated world of the Edwardian era....
