Government just launched a ₦729bn bond to pay off debts owed to electricity companies.
The power firms were owed huge sums, so the sector was choking. Now government is borrowing from investors to clear it, and paying them interest in return.
The first round in February raised ₦501bn, fully subscribed. Pension funds took a large chunk.
This is how big money works. It lends to the country and earns steady returns.
Meanwhile the rest of us only feel the darkness.
Domiciliary Savings Vs Naira Savings
Say you save 1,000,000 naira today at 1,500/dollar. That’s about $667. Bank pays five percent interest, so after a year you have 1,050,000 naira. Sounds like growth, but if the naira falls to 1,800/dollar in that same year, your 1,050,000 naira is now only worth about $583. You earned interest and still lost about $84 in real value.
Now the dom account. Convert that same $667 into dollars instead. Dom accounts pay almost no interest, so assume no growth. A year later, still $667. Convert back at 1,800/dollar and you now have 1,200,600 naira. You did nothing and still came out about 150,000 naira ahead of the naira saver.
That’s the math behind why people hedge. But dom accounts have their own wahala. Low or zero interest means you are preserving money, not growing it. Some banks charge fees, and withdrawing large amounts can hit bottlenecks depending on CBN policy at the time.
Now listen, Naira savings for money you need soon, your short term expenses and emergency fund. Dom savings for money you are parking for the future, especially dollar obligations like school fees abroad or importation.
Split with intention and Keep what you need locally in naira. Protect the rest in dollars. Do not let all your eggs sit in a currency that keeps losing strength.

Message to new investors to always have a cash position especially in the stock market.
First HoldCo is now the most valuable bank on the NGX.
It just overtook Zenith and GTCO today:
First HoldCo: ₦4.80tn
Zenith: ₦4.79tn
GTCO: ₦4.71tn
Six months ago this same bank posted weak results after an ₦826bn cleanup. Everyone saw a struggling bank.
It was actually a deliberate reset.
Today it sits at the top with record profit, and Otedola has increased his stake to 20.4%.
A bad year is not always a bad company.
Struggling to pick which US stock to buy first?
An ETF is the easiest way to start US stocks.
Instead of betting on one company and hoping, you buy a whole basket of hundreds in one move.
One can fail. Hundreds rarely fail together.
For a nervous beginner, this is the calmest entry point.
Solid beginner examples:
• VOO - S&P 500 ETF (top 500 US companies)
• VTI - Total US Stock Market ETF (the entire US market)
