Punjab Police killed more civilians than that were killed by militants during 1984-1995 era.
According to Govt records, it’s estimated that over 11,500 civilians were killed by terrorists in Punjab, 65% of them belonged to the Sikh community.
Mr Jaswant Singh Khalra unearthed evidence that Punjab Police and the Punjab Govt of that time could have killed over 25,000 civilians, majority from the Sikh Community
Make it make sense:
Punjab Police Killed MORE civilians than the Terrorists?

I believe it’s due to Sikh beliefs of “bhana manna - accepting god’s will with grace” and forgiveness plays a role.
Sikhs understand that it’s always some bad people that had contributed in their suffering, and often they take revenge against them only. History is full of examples where whole community or institutions were spared, when some of their own committed heinous crimes against them.
British police committed Jallianwala Bagh murders, but Sikhs never blamed whole British community. They even participated in their wars to defend them.
Some Hindu kings attacked Guru Gobind Singh, and a Hindu brahmin helped kill his sons and mother, but all Hindus were never blamed.
Mughals murdered Sikh Gurus, but the whole Muslim community was never blamed, and in fact Darbar Sahib’s First brick was laid by a muslim.
Same way, Sikh see the Congress party. Rahul Gandhi was never blamed for what his family did.
It’s in the best interest of India to acknowledge the wrongs, accept genocides happened, the Govt at the time was complicit, and current Govts have implemented reforms at various levels to make sure another genocide doesn’t happen again.
Thats all global sikh community is asking.
Nothing else…
Accept the wrongs, don’t make it communal.
This will encourage people to invest money in India and help grow its economy.
No sovereign fund will be comfortable investing money in India, when there is knowledge that their funds could be diverted towards possible genocides.
Finally watched #Satluj last evening, and I can't stop thinking about it.
What a movie! @diljitdosanjh you’re an incredible actor. Thank you for bringing stories like this to us. All the actors were amazing, and the aesthetics and cinematography were absolutely top-notch.
About the story, it’s as heartbreaking as it can get. I don't understand the outrage against it as it's a story about injustice, it has nothing against any religion. Why are some people so bent on opposing it? Have they even watched the movie or are they simply against it because it portrays the injustice done to Punjabis?
Every Sikh, and every Indian, should watch this movie. If this could happen once in Punjab, it can happen again.
We all grew up hearing about this era, about 1984, and about partition. But to see some of our history being played on a screen by our favorite actors, it's entirely a different experience!
Inciting Hindus against Muslims through propaganda films is fine but Sikhs being shown truth about mass disappearances and encounters risks "rekindling anger". This is what I mean by Monopoly of Victimhood. Majority is free to consume hate but minorities don't even deserve truth
If political leaders are genuinely concerned today, they should support an honest accounting of everyone who died in Punjab during those years. Why not conduct an independent “death census”so that the truth is established on the basis of evidence rather than competing narratives?
The tragedy of the Satluj story struck our home just as brutally. My maternal uncle, who was younger than my mom, was in the last year of his college with his whole life ahead of him; he had absolutely no past with the armed struggle. On what seemed like a completely (1/6)

That’s why it needs investigations.
No propaganda, rather full investigation with international supervision to identify facts.
As per Punjab Police data of the time, majority (please read word Majority means 65%) people that were killed by “Terrorists” still belonged to the Sikh community. The Govt records indicate around 12,000 civilians were killed between 1984-1995.
Mr Khalra unearthed evidence of over 25,000 extrajudicial killings, which doubled the number of civilians killed by Terrorists.
There were reports, some people saw police officers dressed as “terrorists” that killed Punjabis (Hindus and Sikhs).
This requires investigation with international investigators to make sure Indians and the world know the truth.
Thoughtful perspective by @AnmolMD .Films and public demonstrations preserve memory, but accountability is secured through meticulous documentation, credible legal advocacy, sustained diplomatic engagement, and the effective use of international legal and human rights institutions.
A film about slain Sikh activist Jaswant Singh Khalra is being screened across India after its removal from a streaming platform.
Khalra exposed killings and secret cremations by Indian security forces during the Punjab insurgency.
Agree 100%
There were some Hindu families that also suffered and should be investigated too.
But, majority victims of police brutality belonged to the Sikh community
Police at the time were running their own gangs. They would dress up as baptized sikhs, threaten people, take away their lands, rape women and kill whole families.
Many people also settled their personal scores and animosity using excuse of insurgency, bribing police and gangs.
It was murder festival, free for all going on.
It will shock the world, if world ends up learning what actually happened there.
What should Global Sikh community do, much more than just showing movie #Satluj ?
It doesn’t matter how many protest marches you do, how many times you show the movie in Gurudwara etc, nothing much will happen to prevent next genocide.
They are one of the most vulnerable visible minorities, globally.
What options do they have??
To seek justice for the atrocities documented by Mr. Khalra, the global Sikh community can pursue strategic litigation through organizations like Ensaaf and utilize the International Criminal Court (ICC) for individual accountability, while simultaneously petitioning the United Nations and national governments to demand formal investigations.
Concrete and actionable steps include:
Fund and Support Strategic Litigation:
Partner with specialized human rights organizations to pursue landmark legal victories in international courts and build prosecutorial dossiers.
Trigger UN Fact-Finding Missions:
Advocate with local parliamentary representatives to call for United Nations experts to investigate evidence of India’s past mass atrocities and ongoing transnational repression.
Target the ICC and ICJ:
Work with international lawyers to present evidence under the Rome Statute to the International Criminal Court, or push allied nations with Universal Jurisdiction to initiate state-level proceedings against identified perpetrators.
Lobby National Governments:
Urge local lawmakers and federal governments to formally recognize the events as genocide and implement targeted sanctions against responsible state actors.
Archive and Preserve Evidence:
Consolidate the foundational evidence of enforced disappearances and secret mass cremations, protecting these testimonies with organizations dedicated to securing justice and reparations

You know what’s the tragedy movie #Satluj exposed?
- Political bankruptcy
In the media, not many are talking about genocide or police atrocities during 80/90s era rather they are talking about Cong vs BJP vs Akali etc etc
Topics should be:
How Law Enforcement itself committed those crimes and what should be done to make sure it doesn’t happen again? What compensations could be provided to the families of victims? What can be done with culprits that are still roaming free?
And, how could India reconcile?
Instead of talking about things that matter, you are witnessing political bankruptcy.
They are intentionally creating shows on TV so that people get confused between politics and political parties, and forget to understand what are the actual issues that need urgent attention?
Genocide happened? Yes
Culprits are still free? Yes
Policies and laws created to make sure this doesn’t happen again? No
Rehabilitation and compensation for victim families? No
No political party in Punjab or India wants to address these, and it does raise serious concerns and should alarm everyone that another genocide could happen again.
There are no guardrails created to prevent this happening again.
This is same Harike Pattan bridge where police dumped Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra’s body.
In 90s, thousands of dead bodies were thrown here by police and in fact Rajasthan govt had to reach out to Beant Singh to complain that they are getting too many dead bodies in canal from Panjab side.
