Last night, the Children's Parliament APPG hosted by Baroness Manzila Uddin gathered in the House of Lords with key supporters and Children's Parliament UK team members like Founding Patron @Anna_Firth, Acting CEO Andrew Fox, Board directors Roderick Thackray and Natasha Leith-Smith, Essex County Council Chair Karen McIvor and Children's Champion, Amanda Frolich (Action Amanda).

On 15 October, 100 elected Child MPs from across the UK will come together in Westminster for a child-led debate giving children the opportunity to speak, debate and have their voices heard at the heart of British democracy.

The event will mark five years since the death of our founder, Sir David Amess, continuing his legacy by giving the next generation a platform to participate, learn and lead.

I'm the first to argue that local government is unsustainable on its current trajectory, but 94% is special. The biggest #CouncilTax rise EVER. And then blaming the government, when of course the previous Tory government did nothing about this either.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for men in the UK, so it is vital that men are aware of their own risk profile. This is particularly important as, regrettably, we do not yet have a proper, national, targeted screening programme that involves all those at higher-risk.

As such, I wholeheartedly support all efforts to raise awareness. https://t.co/ZLP5Zpm3op is a quick and simple online tool that I encourage all men to use. Catching cancers early is the best possible way to boost the chances of successful treatment like I received, so being aware of your risk to the disease is essential.

Now that we have better screening options and more advanced focused treatments available in parts of the NHS, I urge all men to stay alert, be aware of their risk, and talk to their doctor if they have any concerns. But I also urge the Government to take bold action now on a national, targeted screening programme. Put these two together and that's the magic formula to get on top of this cancer and prevent more unnecessary deaths. #ProstateCancer

🌟 What an inspiring day at Essex County Council 🌟

Yesterday, we were absolutely WOWED by 40 brilliant schoolchildren who took part in a rehearsal of the Sir David Amess Children’s Parliament debate.

These young people showed incredible confidence, maturity and passion as they prepared to take their seats in Parliament on 15 October, when children from across the Four Nations of the UK will come together for a very special Children’s Parliament debate.

The debate will be child-led, giving primary school pupils the opportunity to speak, challenge, listen and — most importantly — make sure that children’s voices are heard.

Watching these 40 children yesterday was a wonderful reminder of why Sir David Amess created the Children’s Parliament. He believed passionately that children should have a voice and an opportunity to influence the world around them.

I know he would have been incredibly proud of them. ❤️

🙏🏻huge thank you to all the children, teachers, parents, organisers and everyone at Essex County Council who helped make yesterday such a success.

Together with Stephen Fry, Colin McFarlane, David Cameron, Steve McQueen, Jeremy Clarkson and Nick Jones, I’ve written to the Health Secretary about prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer among men in Britain. It kills one man every 45 minutes, many after a diagnosis too late for treatment to succeed. Black men face a 1 in 4 lifetime risk, double that of the general population, and men whose fathers or brothers have had the disease face a similar threat.

In May the National Screening Committee refused to extend screening beyond a group of just 1,500 men with one specific genetic variant. Everyone else at high risk doesn't have guaranteed access to a test that could save their life. We believe that's wrong, and that the Secretary of State has both the evidence and the power to overturn the ruling.

More than 250 MPs from across the political spectrum have called for a targeted national screening programme, and over 100,000 people have signed petition demanding the same. A programme targeted at those at highest risk would cost £25 million a year, which is 0.01% of the NHS budget.

We are asking the Secretary of State to reconsider the Committee's recommendation and commit to a targeted national screening programme; to act now, rather than wait a decade for further trial data while men continue to die; and to ensure that risk, not luck, decides who is tested.

Reform are about to learn the lesson of the law of diminishing returns.

In 2020, Michael Bloomberg spent $1 billion employing 2,400 staff and saturating coverage on his Presidential campaign. It came to nothing.

Sometimes a bigger cheque just means you make more of the same mistakes.

Britain does not need another protest party. It needs common sense, a serious plan and a party capable of bringing the country together.
