Since October 7, I visited Israel nine times, and I want to testify before God and you: Israel is not the problem.

Last week, Israel buried Shiri Bibas with her children, Ariel and Kfir. Hamas said they had been “arrested.” Forensic reports show they were choked to death in Gaza.

But many who point fingers at Israel might do better to look in the mirror.

I ask Qatar: Why didn’t you arrest the Hamas chiefs in Doha, and demand release of the hostages? Why did you finance terror?

And I ask Iran: Why do you send billions to Hamas and Hezbollah, instead of liberating your own people, who are suffering oppression and poverty?

Egypt, you charged Gazans thousands of dollars to escape the war. How can you lecture about the morality of displacing Gazans?

Jordan, why have you refused to accept any Gazans? Are they not your own people?

Lebanon, instead of discussing Hezbollah’s political role, ban the party.

Syria, if your new president is sincere about his transformation, I ask him to return the body of Eli Cohen. It has been six decades. Allow his wife to bury him before she dies. Hamas abuses dead bodies. Be a better Arab. Be a better Muslim.

And what unfolds in this seven-minute clip is something you need to watch for yourself. (Once you see it halfway through, you’ll know exactly what I’m referring to.)

But he articulates something which I have been trying to share for the past month:

The Nazis, as fundamentally evil as they were, believed that they were engaging in a necessary evil for an ultimate good; they still had a spark of humanity at their core; thus, their main flaw was that they believed the ends justified the means; even though they fully believed in the “result” of a world without Jews, they were still fundamentally opposed to the “actions” they were taking.

This is what motivated the Nazis to find ways of circumventing the existential moral decay they were entering, and allowed them to get creative by using the gas chambers, mass shootings (in the BACK of the head – to avoid direct facial contact), and other passive forms of mass annihilation, while also having as few Nazis as possible actually involved in these acts of murder; they then encouraged those individuals who were involved in this atrocity of mass murder to get drunk every night in order to wash away the person they started seeing in the mirror.

Thus, the existential decay of these individual Nazis actively involved in the mass murder of the Jewish People was simply seen as another layer of “the ends justify the means.”

They were the epitome of “Western” evil.

Hamas is the exact opposite.

This IS their value system.

They prize death, murder, rape, suicide missions, and everything that opposes the very foundation of values and truth to begin with.

The events of October 7th was not an end to a means… there is no future goal… this IS the goal.

They are the epitome of an evil the likes of which we have never before seen.

Please – I know this is social media and some people only watch 60-second soundbites; but please, please, please watch this brilliant interview.

Queen Rania of Jordan was interviewed by @amanpour today, and I have posted the entire interview along with some summary notes.

As a student of Jordanian history, I have watched hundreds of interviews with Queen Rania over the last two decades; I have never seen her so frustrated.

In this interview, she is deeply critical of Western nations that have remained silent on what is happening in Gaza.

She calls Israel an apartheid regime and says there is a hyper fixation on Hamas in the context of what Palestinians have gone through for 70 years.

Summary Notes:

The world's reaction [to what Israel is doing in Gaza] shocked people in the Middle East and Jordan.

There is a glaring double standard.

After October 7, the world immediately and unequivocally stood by Israel and condemned the attacks.

But we are seeing silence in the world when it comes to Gaza.

Countries have stopped expressing concern but always declare support for Israel.

Are we being told that killing an entire family at gunpoint (referring to Hamas in Israel) is wrong, but it's okay to shell them to death (referring to Israel bombing Gaza)?

There has been so much suffering, and the world is silent.

In our world (Arab/Middle East), it's made the Western world complicit.

When asked by Christiane how she reacted to the October 7 attacks on Israelis, Queen Rania said, of course, I was shocked; we condemn the killing of any civilian.

Why isn't there equal condemnation now [of what's happening in Gaza]?

This conflict did not begin on October 7.

For many Palestinians, war has never left. This is a 75-year-old story of overwhelming death and displacement under an apartheid regime that occupies the land.

It's not about being pro-Israeli or pro-Palestinian.

Palestinian people have been living too long under oppression.

They do not have freedom of movement.

There's a hyper-fixation on Hamas. This is a problem that long proceeds Hamas.

Asked if she believes that Hamas has brought this war down on Gazans, is Hamas responsible for it?

Queen Rania says every country has a right to defend itself, but not through collective punishment or war crimes.

Why is when Israel does this, it's self-defense, but when Palestinians do it, it's called terrorism?

One is the occupier; one is the occupied. One has a military, the other one doesn't.

Why is the Israeli narrative always prioritized?

On October 7, the actions were called "savagery barbaric."

We are not seeing the atrocities in Palestine described in the same way.

She says President Biden mentioned that he saw 40 beheaded babies and retracted that. She criticizes CNN for its coverage, but Christiane pushes back.

Queen Rania then expresses frustration that every Arab is asked on television to present their moral credentials, with questions like "Do you condemn Hamas?"

I've never seen a Western official say, "Palestinians have a right to defend themselves."

Lettera aperta ai “colleghi di tenda”

Io in #tenda ho vissuto veramente il primo anno di #università da #fuorisede.
E per arrivare alla Sapienza non bastavano tre mezzi: prima dovevo attraversare l’Aurelia che era come trovarsi a giocare alla roulette russa nel film Il Cacciatore. Ora: a 53 anni non mi va di insegnare la vita a nessuno, al contrario vorrei avere qualcuno che insegni la vita a me che di genitori ho avuto appena l’ombra.
Da giorni osservo questa storia degli alloggi con prezzi impossibili, la mancanza di campus e le immancabili questioni sul privilegio e ho ripensato a quei mesi, estivi e invernali, passati al camping Aurelio tra libri, zanzare e pini giganteschi, a imparare a cucinare e nello stesso tempo stringere bene la bombola del gas sennò esplodevo io e mezzo raccordo anulare. Ve la faccio breve: non c’era e non c’è nessun romanticismo, ancora adesso quando vedo un camping vengo assalito da fastidio, paura e rabbia. Posso solo dirvi come l’ho vissuta allora e cosa mi è rimasto.
Che ero figlio di una generazione che aveva mangiato tutto, aveva vomitato e chiedeva altro cibo ancora non lo capivo chiaramente. Che piuttosto di tornare a casa dai miei con la coda tra le gambe avrei fatto i lavori più umili e che alla fine aveva ragione il professore di economia quando a lezione ci diceva, “vi stanno fottendo il futuro”. Lo guardavamo tutti, o quasi, con lo sguardo fiero stile m’importa sega che solo i ventenni hanno, quasi a dire “ora famo er corteo e risolviamo tutto con la rivoluzione” (poveri dementi che eravamo!)
Avete presente John Fante quando racconta del suo vagabondare a Los Angeles con le tasche vuote e mille sogni in testa? Ecco, io l’ho fatto a Roma e per sovrapprezzo senza il talento di Fante. Alle feste, quegli appartamenti incasinati pieni di studenti a me sembravano privilegi perché nonostante non venga da una famiglia di proletari quello che mi è stato permesso era quella tenda appoggiata ad una scassatissima roulotte che manco una comune di fattoni figli dei fiori l’avrebbe mai, non dico abitata, ma anche solo frequentata. A quelle feste si andava per conoscere (eufemismo) gente, io ci andavo per aprire il frigo senza la preoccupazione che la famosa tenda mi cascasse in testa e per mangiare qualcosa.
Lo ripeto, “quello che mi è stato permesso” perché alla fine padre e madre questo mi hanno messo a disposizione e questo ho provato a sfruttare, bene o male. Non gliene voglio, acqua passata. Certo, a vent’anni vorresti una vita avventurosa ma nello stesso tempo comoda, chi lo nega?
Io avrei preferito per esempio altri genitori non più soldi in tasca, ma così è andata.
Cosa mi è rimasto di tutta questa vita che io adesso vi ho raccontato in maniera divertente ma che davvero mi ha procurato buchi emotivi che manco il figlio di un serial killer può capire? Che le ingiustizie della vita credo siano altre. Vi faccio due esempi? Una volta, scocciato delle lezioni di Dottrine politiche, me ne andai a bighellonare a Lettere. Teneva lezione uno dei più famosi intellettuali italiani, Alberto Asor Rosa altresì detto “il Barone rosso” e non certo per un anello cardinalizio per dimensioni che ostentava alla mano sinistra, ma perché era il più rigido e osservante critico letterario dichiaratamente comunista. Uno che le ha cantate chiare a gente come Vittorini e Calvino che annoverava come scrittori populisti, l’accusa massima che uno come lui poteva scagliare.
Il mio istinto da drop-out si mise subito all’erta: l’eloquio del Prof era eccelso ma lui mi appariva come uno di quei capitalisti stile zio Paperone che ammansisce i suoi dipendenti, “imparate ad obbedire e un giorno potrete essere al mio posto”.
Finale della storia: qualche anno dopo il “barone Rosso” a cui la facoltà aveva detto di no alla nomina della sua compagna come titolare di cattedra fece una scissione, duplicò il dipartimento di Italianistica e diede una cattedra alla signora.
Con storie così si è forgiata la mia anima anarchica.
Ora “amici e colleghi di tenda” io non ho da consigliarvi niente ma ricordatevi che nell’arco di tre anni c’è stato un governo che ha speso 75 miliardi di euro per una misura chiamata superbonus, dei quali quasi la metà per edifici indipendenti o unifamiliari. Sapete cosa significa? Il più grande trasferimento di risorse dal basso verso l’alto nella scala sociale nella storia della Repubblica. Una roba che se la facesse Giorgia Meloni altro che tende, verrebbero fatte le barricate. Quali classi sociali possono aver aderito a questo “regalo”? Quanti campus si sarebbero potuti costruire?
Una sola cosa allora vorrei ricordarvi, le parole del mio prof. di Economia nel lontano 1989, l’anno della caduta del muro di Berlino perché è da lì che veniamo, io e voi.
“Vi stanno fottendo il futuro”.
A cui aggiungo io, “scegliete gli obiettivi giusti”.
