As an educator you donβt get to pick which students you protect, we protect ALL students. Itβs our job.
So at a time where our LGBTQI+ students are facing increased bullying and discrimination, it is our job as educators to make our classrooms a safe place to learn.
Silence feels like classroom management. Unfortunately, many students go entire days without speaking, which is not going to help them socially or academically. If we make the classroom content comprehensible, they will WANT to talk about it!

My name is Miguel, but a lot of my teachers called me Michael.

To any student that is reading this, your identity matters.
βThe joint statement makes it clear that English learners need explicit instruction in phonics, vocabulary and comprehension, and that they also need to have instruction in oral language development β learning to speak and understand English β to make sure they understand the words they are learning to sound out.
Not only is understanding meaning important for reading comprehension, but brain research has also shown that itβs needed in order to begin recognizing words. When students sound out a word they know, their brain begins to recognize it for future reading, a process known as βorthographic mapping.β But if a student doesnβt know the meaning of the word theyβre sounding out, the brain canβt file away the word as recognizable, Goldenberg said.β @ASKNCELA1
β€οΈ When #students dysregulate and exhibit unexpected behaviors, they are thinking with the emotional part of their brain at that moment. This is not a teachable moment. It is a time to connect, not correct. #LeadInclusion#EdLeaders#Teachers#UDL#TeacherTwitter
π₯ Students who have #IEPs are not "special education students." They are simply students. They belong to every educator they have. Receiving a service shouldn't impose an identity. #LeadInclusion#EdLeaders#Teachers#UDL#TeacherTwitter
