Traditional tax-exempt status for amateur athletics requires athletes to be amateurs. If they become paid employees it would break the amateur model threatening the tax exempt status of university athletic programs. Take 20%+ away. Ends aren't meeting.

@WinterSportsLaw@NotThe_TomBrady How was it fine for over a century? Because the presidents agreed on rules and the NCAA enforced them. A form of a CBA. Return is all.
@LBknowsBall You clearly do not know the history and purpose. Blame goes to the Presidents for letting the courts make decisions for college sports. It was never the NCAA job to fight in court
@B_DiNucci6 Shell? At what point in the last 100 years has the NCAA been a legal entity to fight litigation? Not what they were created to do. All the blame goes to the Presidents
@the1stNoeI They were set up by the college Presidents. If the Presidents aren't together, they won't have enforcement power. Not who they are or have ever been. The TTU President could say no anytime he wants and he wouldn't be playing.
@MattHayesCFB The only people that can stop any of this would be the one's that were in charge for 100 years. The university Presidents. They don't have to play him if the TTU President says no.
@PeteThamel@max_olson the court ruled he can play. They can't force a school to put a player on the team or play them. If the school president says no, it's over.
Re: Sorsby
The university presidents have always had the power to put an end to the lawsuits, but theyโre hypocrites and cowards.
When schools agree to be a part of the NCAA, they agree to abide by their rules. Now, if an athlete doesnโt get a favorable ruling, they sue.
If presidents would say, โNo, youโre ineligible and canโt play,โ this is over. But they need athletics to win and make money, so they sit quietly on the sidelines.
Instead of going to court and Congress, how about the women and men hired to lead their universities do just that?
@Clowfb Ok Chris, the Pres says no. Judges only rule "they can" not they had to. Say they could. Are they going to put a judge on the coaching staff to dictate playing time? Of course not. Pres said they won't be on the team it's over.
