Strengthening friendship with a valued neighbour!
It was wonderful meeting President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Delhi. We took stock of the progress in India-Sri Lanka relations in the recent times. We also discussed avenues of cooperation in areas such as energy, connectivity, infrastructure, healthcare, skilling, culture, blue economy and more.
@anuradisanayake
In an op-ed in The Hindu for the #AIImpactSummit2026 and Social Justice Day, I join India’s Labour Minister, @mansukhmandviya, to call for good governance & social dialogue so AI advances decent work, inclusion & shared prosperity—goals of the Global Coalition for #SocialJustice.
Pleased to launch the Playbook for Equitable AI Transitions at #AIImpactSummit2026. Under India’s leadership, we put human capital, skills and decent work at the heart of #AI policy.
With social dialogue and global cooperation, we can harness AI for people, planet and progress.
Warm thanks to Shobha Karandlaje (@ShobhaBJP), Minister of State for Labour and Employment and team for sharing India’s impressive progress to drive formalization, social protection coverage, and women’s workforce participation.
In Delhi today, employers and workers presented their joint Roadmap for Responsible Business Conduct.
This collaboration shows advancing decent work requires dialogue, shared responsibility, and action across enterprises & supply chains.
@ILO is proud to support this milestone.
Privileged to attend the National Independence Day Cebration under the theme Rebuilding Sri Lanka. May we continue to work together to preserve sovereignty & build a united, peaceful and prosperous nation. Happy Independence Day 🇱🇰
Violence & harassment is unacceptable anywhere in the world of work 🚫
Today Sri Lanka moves towards a world of work free from violence & harassment, taking steps to #RatifyC190 (Convention 190)
Ratification instrument will be deposited with @ilo in Geneva in the upcoming days
In the wake of #CycloneDitwah, the @ilo stands in solidarity with Sri Lanka. Our thoughts are with all affected and with those responding. We stand ready to support #lka in the recovery, restore livelihoods, and help build resilience.
Following with interest developments of India's new Labour Codes announced today, including on social protection & minimum wages.
Social dialogue among govt, employers & workers will remain essential as reforms are implemented to ensure they're positive for workers and business.
Modi Government’s Guarantee: Dignity for Every Worker!
From today, the new labour codes have been made effective in the country. They will ensure:
✅ A guarantee of timely minimum wages for all workers
✅ A guarantee of appointment letters for the youth
✅ A guarantee of equal pay and respect for women
✅ A guarantee of social security for 40 crore workers
✅ A guarantee of gratuity for fixed-term employees after one year of employment
✅ A guarantee of free annual health check-ups for workers above 40 years of age
✅ A guarantee of double wages for overtime
✅ A guarantee of 100% health security for workers in hazardous sectors
✅ A guarantee of social justice for workers as per international standards
These reforms are not just ordinary changes, but a major step taken by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for the welfare of the workforce. These new labour reforms are an important step towards a self-reliant India and will give new momentum to the goal of a developed India by 2047.

These Codes will serve as a strong foundation for universal social security, minimum and timely payment of wages, safe workplaces and remunerative opportunities for our people, especially Nari Shakti and Yuva Shakti.
📽️Sudipta Marjit of the Employer Federation of 🇮🇳 shares India’s approach to #LivingWage – empowering workers and their families through data-driven strategies.
The gender pay gap remains stubbornly high, with women earning on average 20% less than men globally.
Action to promote #equalpay for work of equal value is needed, alongside measures to address the undervaluation of jobs where women are overrepresented.

Millions in Asia-Pacific still earn below a living wage.
At the @ILO’s regional dialogue in Colombo, 16 countries committed to wage systems that deliver dignity, equality & shared prosperity.
Living wages are not aspirational—they’re achievable.

In my message to the Regional dialogue on shaping the living wage agenda in Asia and the Pacific, I emphasized that in a world marked by deep inequalities and rising costs of living, we need wages that allow workers not just to survive, but to live with dignity — a #LivingWage.
With its vast workforce & role as a global economic engine, Asia-Pacific is catalysing conversations on making living wages a reality. Recent high-level regional dialogue in Colombo showed strong commitment and collaboration—now it's time to build on the momentum.

The participation of @CanHCSriLanka in the High-Level Regional Dialogue on Living Wages, organized by the ILO, was an opportunity to highlight the Canadian-funded project that is addressing unpaid care work in Sri Lanka. @DevCanada@ILOColombo
Great honour for ILO Regional Director for Asia-Pacific, Kaori Nakamura-Osaka to meet Sri Lanka Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya in Colombo.
Excellent discussions on shared labour & development priorities, ratification of ILO conventions, the care economy and living wages.
