We support excellent science to understand Antarctica’s impact on the global earth system, and how this might change in a +2°C world. Follow our journey
Here's to another seven years.
This morning, Minister @DrShaneRetiMP announced $49m in renewed Government investment to extend the Antarctic Science Platform's research, building on the legacy from phase one.

Home sweet home from the air! Check out this amazing drone footage of our deep-field Antarctic research camp KIS3 this past field season. Our on-ice team spent up to 6 weeks living here on the grounding zone of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, 860km from Scott Base🎥@AntarcticaNZ
The international @SWAIS2C team is gearing up for a second attempt at retrieving seafloor sediment cores from below the Ross Ice Shelf. The traverse is on its way to set up the KIS3 camp.
The extreme polar road trip is underway! Our traverse is carefully crossing the Ross Ice Shelf carrying everything needed to set up the deep-field camp for @SWAIS2C. Find out why here: https://t.co/OWKguGUhgV

A peek behind the scenes of Patrick Gower: On Ice, which airs tomorrow on @ThreeNewZealand. Paddy joined the team maintaing and collecting data from the Commonwealth Glacier's Automatic Weather Station. These stations paint a picture of what’s changing as the climate warms.
The Scott Base crew have started installing the @otago’s Sea Ice Monitoring station, 3km south-west of Observation Hill. It's part of @AntaPlatform's sea ice and carbon cycles project, building on a 20-year record of annual sea-ice growth observations.

@SWAIS2C researchers have had their first glimpse of the sediment cores obtained from the seafloor deep under the Ross Ice Shelf last summer, an important step in the hunt for clues about the past behaviour of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet 👉https://t.co/2luRstUK3I
Sail into the heart of Antarctica's largest sea ice factory with us, where 12 Kiwi researchers onboard the Laura Bassi saw sea ice retreat first hand, collected sediment cores and studied coastal ecosystems in the Ross Sea region MPA.

From obtaining the longest sediment core ever from the Siple Coast to gathering vital oceanographic measurements, here’s the @SWAIS2C end-of-season wrap from Richard Levy (GNS and @VicUniWgtn) 🎥 R Levy, A Powell @AntarcticaNZ, O Twigge @niwa_nz https://t.co/UhpGIntJbT
The SWAIS2C team successfully drilled through 580m of ice, obtained the longest sediment core retrieved from the Siple Coast, & gathered crucial information in their mission to understand the West Antarctic Ice Sheet’s past response to climate warming 🙌 https://t.co/8ltGJlUzCj
In collaboration with the Italian Antarctic Research Programme on a voyage to the Ross Sea, 12 members of the New Zealand team have joined Italian collaborators on the RV Laura Bassi for a 2-month voyage of discovery in the Southern Ocean. 🛥️

2C Tuesday! 🧊
As you set off on your warm camping holidays this Christmas, the SWAIS2C scientists will spend a chilly summer on the ice at the deep field camp located at the Kamb Ice Stream on the Siple Coast. Can you guess which tent belongs to the loud snorer in the group? 💤
Happy campers! 🛩️ All members of the SWAIS2C deep field drilling camp have successfully arrived at Kamb Ice Stream on the Siple Coast. We thank the team for their commitment and Mahi so far and are rooting for them over the holiday season! @SWAIS2C

Eat, sleep, drive, repeat! 🚙
The traverse to Kamb Ice Stream has been underway for almost 11 days, making steady progress toward their destination. Any good advice for passing the time on a long journey? Let the team know in the comments below!
Applications closing soon!
The Antarctic Science Platform is seeking a Deputy Director to provide strategic vision and leadership for the design, development and implementation of the second phase of ASP research and funding for 2025-2032.
