A robot flight attendant caught fire mid-flight and passengers did something nobody expected.

I was in seat 23C when the captain announced that this flight would be "a little different." Then the curtain opened and a black and white humanoid robot rolled out the drinks cart.

For the first ten rows it was flawless. It poured soda, handed out cans, and even tilted its head at a kid who waved. Half the cabin had their phones out.

Then I saw the first spark. A tiny flash near its shoulder, then another, then a thin trail of smoke curling toward the overhead bins while the robot kept pouring a drink like nothing was wrong.

The crew rushed in, the cart stopped, and the whole cabin held its breath. Later a crew member told me it was an older model, and the company is retiring it to launch the next generation.

The strangest part is that nobody was angry. People were clapping. One guy asked if he could get the robot's autograph.
