Ken Sugimori’s original Gen 1 Pokémon encyclopedia artwork laid the foundation for how millions of fans would come to know Pokémon.

Using soft watercolor illustrations and simple poses, each design focused entirely on the Pokémon’s anatomy, personality, and identity without any distracting backgrounds or effects.

These illustrations appeared in early guidebooks, encyclopedias, promotional material, and game manuals, becoming the definitive reference for the original 151 Pokémon.

More than 25 years later, Sugimori’s Gen 1 artwork remains one of the most iconic and influential art styles in Pokémon history.
