This super Niño couldn’t come at a worse time. Energy and thus food prices are already elevated thanks to Trump/Netanyahu’s absolute blunder in Iran, and Putin’s endless war on Ukraine, not to mention climate-fueled hydrological extremes; and meanwhile Trump has brought about a complete withdrawal of the US’ key role in global poverty alleviation and development coordination. It’s authoritarian governance meets accelerated climate change meets US withdrawal from the international community. The Niño already would have placed major strain on many poor countries’ abilities to feed themselves. Now add in Trump-induced governance failures and withdrawals, and it’s going to be worse.
