๐ฑ Could tele-nursing help improve recovery after hip fracture surgery? New research suggests the answer may be yes.
A randomised controlled trial found that older adults who received post-discharge support through video consultations, telephone calls, and an educational booklet experienced improved quality of life and greater functional independence following hip fracture surgery. ๐ป๐๐ฉบ
Patients in the tele-nursing group showed significantly better outcomes in:
โ Vitality
โ Mental health
โ Self care
โ Transfers and mobility
โ Overall functional independence (FIM scores)
As healthcare systems continue exploring innovative models of care, this study highlights the important role telehealth and ongoing education may play in supporting recovery after hip fracture. ๐

๐ฆด Osteosarcopenia and frailty: a powerful connection in older adults
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis including 9,939 participants explored the relationship between osteosarcopenia (combined low bone + low muscle) and frailty.
๐ Key findings:
โข Osteosarcopenia was linked to 5.27ร higher odds of frailty โ ๏ธ
โข In people with osteoporosis/osteopenia, adding sarcopenia increased frailty risk ~3.8ร
โข In people with sarcopenia, adding low bone density increased frailty risk ~1.6ร
โข Findings were consistent across regions, populations, and study designs ๐
๐ก What this means:
Osteosarcopenia is not just a coexistence of two conditions - it is strongly associated with frailty, reduced resilience, and functional declinein older adults.
๐ Important caveat:
Most studies were cross-sectional, so the study authors could not confirm causality - but the association is strong and consistent.
๐ก Take-home message:
Bone health + muscle health + function are deeply interconnected, reinforcing the need for integrated screening and intervention strategiesin ageing populations.

โ๏ธ Staying Active in Colder Weather: Supporting Strong Bones and Steady Steps
As temperatures drop, it can be tempting to slow down and stay indoors more often. However, maintaining regular movement through the colder months plays an important role in supporting strength, balance and bone health.
Reduced activity can contribute to muscle weakness, reduced balance and increased risk of falls, all of which are key factors in hip fracture risk. Even small amounts of daily movement can make a meaningful difference.
Simple ways to stay active in winter include:
โข Indoor strength and balance exercises
โข Short walks during daylight hours
โข Gentle home based routines such as sit to stand practice
โข Staying socially active through group activities or classes
Supporting movement in everyday life is a powerful way to protect independence and reduce falls risk across the lifespan.

๐ฆด Can orthogeriatric care prevent repeat fractures after a hip fracture?
A major nationwide study of 97,976 hip fracture patients found that hospitals with orthogeriatric co-management had a lower rate of secondary fragility fractureswithin the first year after injury.
Even though the reduction was modest, it was consistent and sustained over time, reinforcing that integrated geriatric and orthopaedic care is more than just acute treatment โ itโs prevention in action.
๐ก Key takeaway:
Better coordinated care after a hip fracture can help reduce the risk of a second, often devastating fracture.

๐ How common is reoperation after hip fracture surgery?
๐ฅ A large nationwide study from England, examined outcomes for 164,691 older adults treated for hip fracture across 159 hospitals.
The study found that 4.6% of patients required at least one reoperation within 12 months of their initial surgery, with rates varying substantially between hospitals, from 2.3% to 9.4%.
๐ Key findings:
โข Infection was the most common reason for reoperation within the first 30 days
โข Periprosthetic fracture became the leading cause after 30 days
โข Patients with sub-trochanteric fractures treated with cephalomedullary nails had the highest reoperation rates (7.2%)
โข Reoperation rates were lower in older patients
๐ก One important insight from this study is the wide variation in reoperation rates between hospitals. This suggests there may be opportunities to better understand differences in surgical practice, postoperative care, and complication prevention strategies to improve outcomes for patients after hip fracture.
The authors note that these findings can help support informed shared decision-making for patients and families navigating hip fracture treatment and recovery.

๐จ New Monash University research highlights an important link between ultra-processed food intake, attention, and dementia risk in middle-aged Australian adults.
A cross-sectional study of 2,192 dementia-free Australians aged 40โ70 years found that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) was associated with poorer attention performance and higher modifiable dementia risk scores, independent of overall diet quality, including adherence to a Mediterranean diet.
๐ Key findings:
โข Every 10% increase in UPF intake was associated with lower attention scores and higher dementia risk scores
โข Effects were independent of overall diet quality
โข No significant association was found with memory performance
โข Attention appears to be the most sensitive cognitive domain affected
๐ง Why this matters:
Ultra-processed foods (such as packaged snacks, soft drinks, and ready-made meals) now contribute a substantial proportion of dietary intake in Australia. The findings suggest that the level of food processing itself may be an independent factor in brain health, beyond traditional measures of diet quality.

๐ 1 in 3 patients.
Thatโs how many older adults went on to long term opioid therapy within a year after hip fracture surgery in a large Danish study of more than 26,000 people aged 65+.
A new machine learning model study shows it may be possible to identify higher risk patients right at discharge using just 8 routinely collected factors, including age, fracture type, hospital stay, surgical delay, medications, and mobility status.
Why it matters: long term opioid use after surgery is linked with poorer outcomes, and clinicians currently have limited tools to predict who is most at risk.
The model showed moderate predictive performance but strong calibration, and is now available as a simple risk calculator. The next step is external validation and testing in real world clinical settings.

Looking after your brain health may be simpler, and more enjoyable, than many people realise ๐ง
Experts are increasingly highlighting that staying physically, mentally, and socially active may help support memory and cognitive function as we age. The key is not one โmagicโ brain exercise, but a combination of regular habits that challenge both the body and mind.
Some examples include:
โข Walking, strength training, dancing, swimming, or other regular movement
โข Learning a new skill, language, instrument, or hobby
โข Reading books, listening to podcasts, or trying puzzles and crosswords
โข Playing cards, chess, trivia, or strategy games
โข Practising mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing
โข Staying socially connected through family, friends, volunteering, or community groups
โข Prioritising good sleep and managing stress
Research continues to show that physical activity is especially important, with exercise helping support blood flow and overall brain health. Even small, consistent activities done regularly can add up over time.
The encouraging message is that itโs never too early or too late to start building brain healthy habits ๐

๐ Men's Health Week | 15 - 21 June 2026
This Men's Health Week, it's a timely reminder that looking after your bone health is an important part of healthy ageing.
While osteoporosis is often thought of as a women's health issue, men are also at risk of bone loss, falls and hip fractures as they age. In fact, men who experience a hip fracture often face serious health complications and reduced independence.
The good news? Staying active, eating a balanced diet, maintaining muscle strength and speaking with your healthcare team about bone health can help reduce risk.
Taking steps today can help support mobility, independence and quality of life for years to come. ๐ช

๐ฆด Periprosthetic femur fractures (PFFs) are becoming an increasingly important challenge for healthcare systems as the number of joint replacements continues to rise.
The Scottish National Audit of Periprosthetic Femur Fractures (SNAP Femur) study found that patients with PFFs experience significant mortality and functional decline, with a one year mortality rate of 20.8%.
The study also highlights that current registry coding limitations likely underestimate the true incidence of PFFs, reinforcing the need for better national data capture and multidisciplinary models of care.
๐กThe findings are particularly relevant to ANZHFR, demonstrating that patients with PFFs experience outcomes similar to those seen after hip fracture, including increased mortality and functional decline. The study also reinforces the value of national clinical quality registries, multidisciplinary models of care and robust data collection in driving improvements in patient outcomes.

Hip fracture care improves when we measure it ๐
A recent proof-of-concept study highlights the development of a national hip fracture registry framework in Brazil, aligned with international minimum datasets for orthogeriatric care.
The study reinforces that:
โข Hip fractures are increasing rapidly with population ageing
โข Outcomes remain poor, with high mortality and long-term disability
โข A unified registry is essential to track care quality and outcomes consistently
๐ก The key message for systems worldwide:
You canโt improve what you donโt consistently measure. National registries are a critical foundation for safer, more effective hip fracture care.

Delirium isnโt just a complication - itโs a predictor of recovery ๐ง
A recent large multicentre prospective cohort study (n=1,400+) found that nearly 30% of hip fracture patients experienced delirium, but the highest risk of poor outcomes was seen in those who had delirium both before and after surgery.
Patients with persistent delirium were significantly more likely to leave hospital with poor functional outcomes.
๐ก The takeaway:
Itโs not enough to assess delirium once. Tracking it across the entire pathway helps identify patients at highest risk and tailor care earlier.
