Solutions journalism stories are not selected for publication simply because they focus on responses. Like all strong journalism, they must demonstrate newsworthiness, relevance, evidence and public interest.
Join us on Friday, 3rd July 2026, for the second session of The Africa Feature Network's Monthly Training Webinars on Solutions Journalism as we explore "What Makes a Solutions Story Newsworthy? An Editor's Perspective on Story Selection."
The discussion will examine how editors assess solutions stories, what makes a story stand out in a newsroom, and the factors that influence editorial decisions from pitch to publication
The session will feature Helen Shikanda, a multimedia journalist and member of the Solutions Journalism Training of Trainers programme, and Josephat Odipo, Senior News Anchor and Editor at Citizen Radio with over two decades of newsroom experience in reporting, editing and story development.
It will be moderated by Mercy Tyra Murengu, Director of Journalism and Editorial Strategy at The Africa Feature Network.
Friday, 3rd July 2026 from 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM (EAT)

Earlier today, The Africa Feature Network CEO Peter Aowa, alongside Head of Logistics David Sebit and Field Coordinator Jacinta Atieno , held a meeting with Her Excellency Alamitu Jattani, the First Lady of Marsabit County and Chairperson of the County First Ladies Association, at her office in Kilimani, Nairobi.
The discussions focused on the #Miles4MealsAndDignity Run Campaign, as well as the upcoming second edition of Luminate Africa Journal, which will spotlight African women driving transformation across the continent.
The meeting also explored potential areas of collaboration aimed at advancing impactful community initiatives across Kenya.
In Zambia, the Energy Demand Stimulation Incentive (ZEDSI), launched with SEforALL and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, links electricity supply to consumption by providing performance-based grants to mini-grid operators. This mechanism ensures sustainability while encouraging local communities to maximize productive energy use.

It is a chilly morning, and a 62-year-old Mary Adhiambo Otieno, popularly known in Nyangajo village as “Nyamasayi”, which translates to “the daughter of Maasai”, a Luo name she earned because of her fondness for Maasai attire, is in black oversized gumboots, green t-shirt, white overall with the right hand holding a machete, lying on the right shoulder, while the left hand holding a blue handled-bucket. Being a staunch Catholic, she hums a melody synonymous with the denomination as she treks to the lake.

Sixty-three years ago, Kenyans took a decisive step toward governing themselves. It was a declaration that their future would no longer be written for them, but by them.
And that spirit remains relevant today. Every time communities tell their own stories, every time young people challenge the status quo, every time citizens hold leaders accountable, the promise of Madaraka lives on.
As we celebrate this day, we honour those who fought for freedom and those who continue the work of building a more informed, just, and prosperous society.
Happy Madaraka Day, Kenya.

The robot is powered by solar energy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for farm automation, with a broader goal to address labour loss and low precision. The machine is equipped with an AI-driven computer system with soil and atmospheric sensors to analyse weather patterns, soil conditions and crop history to forecast yields or disease outbreaks. This will enable farmers to plan ahead of a crisis.

On Saturday last week, our Founder and CEO, Journalist Peter Aowa, led some members of the Nairobi team during a press conference on the upcoming #Miles4MealsAndDignityRun slated for 14th September 2026.
The 1,000-kilometre endurance run will be flagged off in Kilifi town on 14th September this year and will continue for a period of 27 days, comprising 23 days of active running and four scheduled rest days, before ending in Busia town at the Kenya-Uganda border.
The challenge will be led by Mr. Aowa alongside like-minded professional marathoners, partnering organisations, companies, institutions, fitness communities, and individual participants who will register under the 5km, 10km, 15km, and 20km community run categories in Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, and Eldoret.
Through this national advocacy and resource mobilisation campaign, the Africa Feature Network seeks to address two critical challenges affecting learners across Kenya today: child hunger in schools and period poverty among school-going girls.
The campaign aims to raise KES 13 million to support a School Feeding Programme targeting 1,000 learners across six primary schools in three counties for one academic year, alongside the Pad a Girl Initiative, which seeks to support 5,000 girls with sanitary towels and menstrual health support along the campaign corridor.
Speaking during the press conference, Mr. Aowa noted that the initiative goes beyond fundraising and seeks to mobilise communities, institutions, and stakeholders around practical solutions capable of improving learning conditions and educational continuity for vulnerable children.
The official registration portal for institutions, organisations, schools, universities, corporate teams, fitness groups, and individual participants will be opened on Friday, 29th May 2026.
Miles4Meals & Dignity Run is bringing together everyone — kids, students, families, running clubs, friends, and corporate teams — for a meaningful day of fitness and impact.
With 2KM, 5KM, 10KM, 15KM, and 20KM categories available, there’s a place for everyone to take part.
Registration opens tomorrow. Full category and package details are on the poster.

There is a notion that solutions journalism is geared towards feel-good stories, and that as long as it makes the audience feel good, it merits the label of solutions journalism. This is something that @Aowapeter the founder and CEO of The Africa Feature Network, firmly rules out. He believes that such conclusions largely come from those who are either opposed to solutions journalism or have no understanding of what solutions journalism actually looks like.
We're going outside the continent to bring you stories of Africans and the Caribbeans doing great work away from home.

Happy #WorldDayForSafetyAndHealthAtWork
April 28 is a day to focus on the people behind the work — and the conditions they work in. It’s about safety, dignity, and the systems that make both possible.
In many parts of Africa, efforts to improve workplace safety are taking shape — from stronger labour policies and enforcement to community-led training, worker cooperatives, and innovations that reduce risk on the job.
These are practical responses showing what can work, where, and why.
Today, we join the world in recognizing the people and systems making work safer — and the importance of scaling what is already delivering results.
Solutions journalism is a game changer. @sefu_sabila, our Head of Correspondents, is of the view that journalism in the 21st century has to tell stories beyond problems.

The Africa Feature Network joins the global community in marking International Chinese Language Day.
Observed annually on April 20 as part of the UN Language Days, the day also commemorates the birth of Cang Jie, the legendary figure credited with inventing Chinese characters, making it one of the earliest and most enduring writing systems in human history.
The Chinese language took root in Africa through a history of trade, diplomacy, and deepening bilateral engagement. Today, it is spoken across East, West, Central, and Southern Africa, used within diplomatic missions, academic institutions, infrastructure corridors, and growing business communities.
The impact of the Chinese language in Africa is both structural and transformative. In governance and diplomacy, it has enabled high-level dialogue and institutional partnerships within frameworks such as the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. In education, it has expanded access to scholarships, academic exchanges, and research collaboration. Economically, Mandarin has become a practical bridge along trade and investment corridors stretching across the continent.
Culturally, African scholars, artists, and communicators are engaging with the Chinese language on their own terms, producing a dialogue that is increasingly reciprocal. There is also a growing commitment across the continent to balancing global languages with the preservation of indigenous ones.
As the continent marks International Chinese Language Day, the conversation touches on partnership, preparation, and the possibilities that open when Africans engage the world from a position of knowledge.
We remain committed to telling these stories, where language is not just a tool, but a force that connects people, ideas, and possibilities across Africa.
