The key to saving the environment is not looking backward, it’s moving forward.

I realized this the first time I visited Italy twenty years ago. Everything was clean and green. The rivers sparkled. The lesson for me was obvious: the answer is not underdevelopment. The answer is progress.

When China was poor, the air was so polluted that people could barely see the blue sky. Today, blue skies have returned to their cities. Development does not only create wealth, it also provides the resources needed to restore and protect the environment.

Some environmentalists want us to preserve every aspect of our biodiversity, including the mosquitoes for example, so that researchers can fly in once every ten years from their universities (which build particle accelerators and billion-dollar laboratories with their pocket money), study our ecosystems, and count how many people died from dengue outbreaks.

They want to buy our air through carbon credits. If carbon credits were such a great deal, they would be selling them to us, not the other way around.

Cleaning every river, lake, and water source in El Salvador, and ensuring they remain clean and sparkling, would cost roughly $12 billion. Where is that money supposed to come from without economic development? Carbon credits?

The path forward for our country is the path of Japan and Singapore, not the path of the Congo.

Madam Secretary Hillary Clinton,

If you are convinced that torture is taking place at CECOT, El Salvador is ready to cooperate fully.

We are willing to release our entire prison population (including all gang leaders and all those described as “political prisoners”) to any country willing to receive them.
The only condition is straightforward: it must be everyone.

This would also greatly assist journalists and your favorite NGOs, who would then have thousands of former inmates available for interviews, making it far easier to find additional voices critical of the Salvadoran government (or willing to confirm whatever conclusions are already expected).

Surely, if these testimonies reflect a systemic reality, a much larger pool of sources should only reinforce the claim, and many governments should be eager to offer protection.

Until then, we will continue prioritizing the human rights of the millions of Salvadorans who today live free from gang rule.

Me recomendaron hacer una cadena nacional y dar un discurso para conmemorar este hito histórico: 1,000 días sin homicidios desde el inicio de nuestro Gobierno. 1. Constitutional changes need a supermajority in Congress, which requires an overwhelming democratic mandate.

2. Yes, let the people vote for whom they want in a free election. You’d be surprised how common this is in the First World.

3. El Salvador was remote-controlled for decades until it stopped taking poisoned recipes from abroad and achieved peace on its own terms. Most “concerns” come from groups that seek to dictate policy but couldn’t rival Bukele’s approval ratings if they were reborn.
