Can you feel the urban heat? Here’s a snapshot of satellite-derived land surface temperatures across Metro Manila and nearby areas last April. What patterns stand out to you?
The map reveals a striking thermal contrast. Deep red zones highlight densely built urban centers where land surface temperatures can exceed 40 °C and, in extreme hotspots, approach ~70 °C.
In contrast, bluish-green areas indicate cooler surfaces, typically associated with vegetation, water bodies, or less-developed land. A few scattered patches appear cooler as well, but these are likely cloud cover rather than ground readings.
The pattern is clear: Metro Manila’s urban core is significantly hotter than its surrounding suburbs and greener outskirts. This is a classic example of the urban heat island effect, where concrete, asphalt, and dense infrastructure absorb and re-radiate heat throughout the day and night, while limited tree cover reduces natural cooling through shade and evapotranspiration.
As cities continue to expand, additional heat from vehicles, buildings, and industrial activity further intensifies local temperatures. These elevated surface temperatures can increase energy demand, worsen heat stress, and raise health risks, especially for elderly and low-income communities. #TagInit2026 #urbanheatisland #MetroManila

📊 The Rise of the Independent Bloc
WR Numero (Aug 2025) shows 35.8% of Filipinos now identify with “none of the above” — bigger than Marcos (19.4%), Duterte (28.6%), or the Opposition (16.2%).
Why it’s growing:
Duterte bloc collapsing (40% → 28.6%)
Marcos support aging out (strong in seniors, weak in youth)
Opposition stuck at its ceiling (~16%)
PulPol Pundit poll confirms: almost half of voters self-identify as independents, and 81% still like strong peace & order policies — just not the old DDS branding.
👉 The independent bloc is now the real kingmaker. Whoever speaks to their pragmatic, issue-based demands on law & order, corruption, and cost of living will define 2028.
Been reading some articles referring to DepEd’s role re: classrooms and their cost. For clarification, even if the budget is initially lodged with DepEd- this is transferred to DPWH- which costs out/builds/pays for the classrooms
SOTTO PRAISES KOKO'S STAND ON VP IMPEACHMENT TRIAL: 'A GREAT VALEDICTORY ACT'
Senator-elect Tito Sotto on Wednesday, June 11, lauded outgoing Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel for his principled stand to proceed with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, calling it a "great valedictory act."
"It's a great valedictory act for graduating Senator and Minority Leader Koko Pimentel — with a mind for the Constitution and a heart for the people. God Bless my SP friend!" Sotto said.
Pimentel, whose term ends in 2025, asserted during the Senate session on June 10 that the impeachment trial must push through and warned that any attempt to dismiss the complaint prematurely would violate the Constitution.
"Ang tanong nila, 'Makakain ba itong impeachment?' Marami namang bagay sa buhay na importante rin kahit hindi nahahawakan, tulad ng hustisya," Pimentel said.
"Ang hustisya hindi natin nakikita, hindi natin mahawakan, pero napakahalagang bagay sa buhay ng tao," he added.
