AS WE HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL… PLEASE REMEMBER THIS.

Not every student had a summer of trips, camps, enriching experiences, rest, or new things.

Some lost their home, faced food insecurity, or carried loss, stress, fear, or uncertainty.

Some are returning after feeling scared or unsafe at home, in their communities, or even in environments that were supposed to be supportive.

And it��s not just students.

Staff and teachers may be returning after working extra jobs to put food on the table, caring for ailing family members, grieving losses, or simply trying to stay afloat.

Some are energized. Some are exhausted. Some are both. Some are also carrying their own feelings of fear, stress, or instability.

So this year, lead with grace.

Instead of “Where did you go this summer?” try:
👉 “What would help make this a great year for you?”
👉 “What’s something that makes you feel welcome at school?”

Actionable ways to make a difference:
✔ Don’t assume students have all supplies, keep extras on hand
✔ Offer quiet support: snacks, pencils, encouragement without attention
✔ Greet every student and colleague with warmth and consistency
✔ Notice behavior before judging it, ask what might be behind it
✔ Make space for belonging, not just performance
✔ Say it often: “I’m really glad you’re here.”

A smile. A clean slate. A little patience. A moment of kindness. These cost nothing, but can change everything.

Some will walk in with new backpacks.

Others will walk in carrying invisible weight on their shoulders.

Make sure they all feel seen, safe, and welcome.
