My latest chapter in "25 for 25 – Heirlooms for Posterity" published by the Friends of the National Archives Malta is titled "From Colony to Republic: Insights from the Private Fonds of Sir Ugo P. Mifsud, Paul Boffa, Dom Mintoff and Eddie Fenech Adami". The publication is ably edited by Prof George Cassar, Prof Charles Farrugia and Dr Evelyn Pullicino.

Without going into the merits of the Jason Arday case, we should really be prompted to ask difficult questions about academia and its inherent toxicity which tends to build people up, only to destroy and crush them at some stage. Professor Arday undoubtedly made several errors of judgement; but the same institution which set him up for failure, was ready to abandon him once he no longer remained useful. It is a sad reflection of what academia can be like; at once a place of learning and research but also the place of vindictive behaviour and skullduggery.

Today, the Church marks the feast of St Benedict of Nursia, patron of Europe. The Benedictine heritage which built and shaped Europe continues to inspire till this very day. The Rule of St Benedict is not a complex treaties on how to live a perfect life but a reminder to find the sacred in the absolute ordinary of every day life. It provides for a stable rhythm of community, work and prayer. We owe him a great debt.

In my monthly article (in Maltese) in Il-Lehen I wrote a piece about Cardinal Camillo Ruini; one of the greatest churchmen of the last quarter of the 20th century, and the first quarter of the 21st.

While looking at the life of this great man, I also critically engage with some of his standpoints and ask to what extent is it still possible - or even desirable - for the church to enter into dialogue with the world of politics and culture. Rather than seek "relevance", the Church should seek to be "prophetic", and in order to be prophetic it needs to be courageous enough to live its mission in an authentic manner.

Picked up this book at Tirana Airport. It is a book I wish I read before visiting Albania and one which should serve as a template for many other political biographies. Absolutely brilliant.

As the UK marks the tenth anniversary of its vote for Brexit, and as it prepares to usher in its seventh PM in ten years, I can't help but feel that the referendum did not answer any question definitively. Instead, it revealed the fissures and conflicts that had been brewing beneath the surface for a long time. Rather than resolving a single political issue, Brexit raised several other questions that cannot be answered politically because they are primarily cultural and, therefore, more deep-seated. Alas, I fear that things will get much worse (i.e., a Farage premiership) before they can start getting better...

Cardinal Camillo Ruini (1931 - 2026) was a great churchman who continued to pioneer the dialogue between faith and reason, and faith and politics.
