A 16-year-old girl was hanged by the Iranian regime for the “crime” of being raped. In the courtroom she tore off her hijab, took off her shoes and threw them at the judge. She shouted that the man who raped her should be punished, not her. The judge replied that she had been sentenced to death.
On August 15, 2004, 16-year-old Atefeh Rajabi Sahaleh was publicly hanged from a construction crane in the city of Neka, Iran. The judge in her case, Haji Rezaei, personally placed the noose around her neck.
Atefeh was first arrested at the age of 13 after she was found in a car with a boy. At that time she received a short prison sentence and 100 lashes.
According to a BBC documentary, while in custody she was sexually abused by prison guards.
Later she was arrested twice more and convicted of “crimes against chastity.” Under Iranian law, a fourth conviction automatically leads to the death penalty.
The man involved in the rape — 51-year-old Ali Darabi, a former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — was also punished. He received 95 lashes.
In court documents, her age was falsified and listed as 22.
After she was executed with the judge personally participating, the international human rights organization Amnesty International called the execution a crime against humanity.
